All the while I’m challenging myself to learn new techniques and skills. My camera is always with me when out and about and the photos I take provide a rich source of ideas for my paintings. The koru’s well known spiral, representing the unfolding of new life and a national symbol of New Zealand, is a feature in the children’s work.

How:

We studied korus in nature and practised drawing them.

We looked at the Koru art of Raewyn Harris from New Zealand as well as various drawings and tattoos with the koru shape.

It’s a good idea to get the students to practise drawing a spiral shape BIG so they can return the line out of the centre. This time we could choose one koru to colour silver - cool colours and gold - warm colours, to add to our design.

End Result:

All children completed a stunning koru in warm or cool colours.

I had done it may years ago successfully with a Prep class and wanted the Year 1-2 students to add a little more detail.

What:

Room 10’s focus has been the artwork of Hawke’s Bay artist Raewyn Harris.

The link will also be on the CONFIRMATION page after you pay to download immediately. My instagram account: @primary_school_art features current projects, many of which will be made into a blog post and lesson plan. We then moved onto a smaller sample, thinking about spacing, size, position and the use of warm and cool colours. You should be very proud of your work!

.

We thought about the size of the koru, its position, and colours.

It symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. Napier-based artist Raewyn Harris utilises this, camera in hand, to be reproduced later as beautiful watercolour paintings.

KORU CREATIONS

By Matt Mortimer

We are spoilt across our wonderful country with such natural wonders and beauty right on our doorsteps – or a short drive away.

This project was one of a few lessons I did with Year 1-2 students on art from different cultures. The pictures were displayed in the hall, ready for the Art Exhibition.

Great job everyone! Next step was painting!

Using a larger circle, we thought about how we could improve on our first design. We used black ink daubers to get the thick black lines. Please check you type in the correct email for link to be sent automatically.

I am sharing my lesson and unit plans and student artwork examples with other art teachers.
