The thick application of paint and visible brushstrokes are typical of abstract American painting of the 1950s and early 1960s; notice that color and texture are favored over line and detail, especially in the background.

Biography

Paul Wonner's parents hired a local California artist to teach him painting while he was still in high school.

Where some artists delved into studies of abstraction, Wonner dedicated himself to the close observation of the representational world. A strong example of Bay Area figurative painting in the Spencer collection is Paul Wonner’s 1961 canvas, Figure with Flowers.

In Studio: Two Tables Popover and Coffee, Wonner creates space through shapes found among household objects; the circle of a coffee cup, the flatness of a ruler, or the length of kitchen knife.

This painting reflects the lighting and spatial structure of the Bay Area Figurative movement yet offers foresight to his ensuing attention to the still life genre.

Paul Wonner’s stylistic shift to overt still life painting in the 1970s reasserted his fascination with the parameters of realism. Apr 2022

Wonner masterfully constructs his landscapes of objects, creating subtle contradictions in space to keep curiosity afloat. Skulls, mirrors, and flowers are normally found in the vanitas; the presence of a nude figure, however, is less common. Landscapes of Objects, 1966-2001, is a celebration of Wonner’s connection to Berggruen Gallery, and his work’s importance among prominent California collections.
