paul bennett artist biography

He is originally from London, but now lives and works in the wild and inspiring Lake District, Cumbria. Paul wants his paintings to tease out more than the eye can see, to draw people in and invite them to experience – not just consume – an image.

Paul graduated from art school in 2001. A few years on, Bennett returned to his love of painting, and he now lives & works in the wild and inspiring Lake District area of Cumbria as a full-time painter.

With global representation, Bennett specialises in contemporary abstract seascape & landscape paintings.

Paul Bennett

Born in 1975 in Buckinghamshire, just on the outskirts of London, Paul Bennett is a contemporary painter known for his semi-abstract seascapes and landscapes. The three styles are very different, but all strive to generate a sense of intimacy and isolation while leaving the subject open to interpretation. Gallery, Taipei City, Taiwan

Scotland and the southwest of England continue to offer him further inspiration, both accessible and rich in visual atmosphere.

After graduating in 2001 with a BA Honours in Fine Art Painting, Bennett began working in graphic design, primarily within the finance sector in London’s City district near St.

Paul’s and Moorgate. His paintings are represented by galleries that also sell the works of Picasso, Hirst, Rothko, Matisse, Newman and Warhol, as well as many other revered artists.

Gallery

UK artist Paul Bennett was born in 1975, in Buckinghamshire, on the outskirts of London.

After graduating from art college with a BA Honours in Fine Art Painting in 2001, Bennett began establishing for himself a successful career in graphic design, living and working in London.

The portraiture has a different angle and the aim is to reinvent the mass produced and give it a more visceral interpretation. His work generates a sense of intimacy and isolation while leaving the subject open to interpretation. This is accomplished by using rich textures, multiple layers and mark making. Now based in the Lake District National Park, he spends his days in the studio and, whenever possible, explores the lakes, mountains, and coastlines of northwest England.

The seascape and landscapes paintings are created from memory, rather than referring to photography, resulting in more abstracted and expressive pieces rather than realistic representation. Paul's paintings are represented by galleries that also sell the works of Picasso, Hirst, Rothko, Matisse, Newman and Warhol; as well as many other revered artists.

F.A.

The intention is to create from memory, and to produce a finished work that is abstracted and more expressional than representational.

With the advance and rise of digital imagery, It has been Bennett's aim to create work that is most definitely painted; accomplished by using rich textures, multiple layers, poured paint, and brush/palette knife marks. Occasionally Bennett will refer to photography as a starting point, and as a way to engage with the surface and begin the initial mark making process, after this point it is all an abstract interpretation of the memories he has and places he has experienced.

This becomes a way of escaping the everyday mass-produced visuals that we are constantly exposed to, and alters the way in which we are so used to digesting and assimilating our visual world.

All the paintings for sale are original art created using oil paint.

Found in private and public collections worldwide, Paul’s main aim is to create work that is most definitely painted; an antidote to mass produced visuals, which are consumed, almost subconsciously, in our everyday. After years behind a desk, he returned to his roots in painting and found a studio attached to an old steam museum in Kew Bridge, a place that reignited his passion for art.

Following a series of successful exhibitions and collaborations with galleries, he transitioned to a full-time career as a professional fine artist.

Initially focused on portraiture, his work gradually evolved into exploring a more expressive, abstracted sense of place through landscape and seascape.

Now living with his wife and two children in the Lake District, Bennett continues to develop a distinctive body of work that bridges abstraction and observation, inspired by the shifting moods and natural drama of the British landscape.
