However, he again became frustrated with his school's singular focus on classical subjects and techniques.

During this time, he wrote to a friend: "They just go on and on about the same old stuff: Velázquez for painting, Michelangelo for sculpture." Once again, Picasso began skipping class to wander the city and paint what he observed: gypsies, beggars and prostitutes, among other things.

In 1899, Picasso moved back to Barcelona and fell in with a crowd of artists and intellectuals who made their headquarters at a café called El Quatre Gats ("The Four Cats").

According to legend, his first words were "piz, piz," his childish attempt at saying "lápiz," the Spanish word for pencil.

Education

Picasso's father began teaching him to draw and paint when he was a child, and by the time he was 13 years old, his skill level had surpassed his father's. As there were groups of 4 or 5 students, there were between 5 and 6 teams per class.

Olivier Picasso embarked on the mission to write his latest biography, Picasso: An Intimate Portrait, because as he read articles and books about his grandfather, he wanted to not only humanize the man, but he realized that many stories and images about the famed artist were just plain false. (Gilot would later marry scientist Jonas Salk, the inventor of the polio vaccine.)

Children

Picasso fathered four children: Paulo (Paul), Maya, Claude and Paloma Picasso.

This “tissue paper” stage took a few lessons.

Early Life

Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, Spain, on October 25, 1881. a picture for its own sake.

By this point in his life, he was also an international celebrity, the world's most famous living artist. As a class, we discussed how colour creates moods or atmospheres in paintings, then talked about how Picasso simplified the shapes and features with strong, dark outlines in black.

The scheme of work has lessons that introduce a number of Picasso’s Cubist portrait paintings, which students then respond to in their groups.

I delivered this project in the last (hectic) summer term in school, so I needed to make sure it covered a few bases:

  • The project engaged all students, but particularly boys
  • It promoted teamwork and effort
  • It gave students autonomy over their final outcomes
  • Students learned about Picasso’s Cubist portraits
  • It included colour theory
  • Students were taught new compositional rules and portrait painting skills
  • It was simple to prep for each lesson

This project was delivered during enrichment week and was based on feedback from students about art activities they wanted to do during their last weeks in school.

Lonely and deeply depressed over the death of his close friend, Carlos Casagemas, he painted scenes of poverty, isolation and anguish, almost exclusively in shades of blue and green. In 1961, at the age of 79, he married his second wife, Jacqueline Roque.

While married to Khokhlova, he began a long-term relationship with Marie-Thérèse Walter. He has no real style.

"Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso."

Though he was a relatively poor student, Picasso displayed a prodigious talent for drawing at a very young age. They had a daughter, Maya, together. "Guernica" remains one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history.

Later Works: 'Self Portrait Facing Death'

In contrast to the dazzling complexity of Synthetic Cubism, Picasso's later paintings display simple, childlike imagery and crude technique.

What would be the impact of using warm and cold colours?Would the tissue paper be ripped or cut up?

Since the cardboard heads were so big – over 1m! What's the point of that? If you can’t get the boards, or want something bigger – large cardboard sheets would still be perfect!

I cut the outline of different heads from the boards, ready for students to work directly onto.

He just keeps on trying other things.

  • It's not what the artist does that counts. He invented the giraffe, the elephant and the cat.
