The Music of Carmen

Overture: A Prelude to Drama

The opera begins with one of the most famous overtures in classical music. Their views proved to be prophetic, as Carmen has since become one of the most popular works in the entire operatic repertoire. The smugglers return and after the attack, Don José has no choice but to join them as he realises his military career is finished.

Act III

Several months later, Carmen, José and the smugglers enter a mountain pass.

The melody is based on a traditional Cuban dance rhythm, giving it an exotic flair. This aria has become one of the most recognizable pieces in the entire opera.

Don José, a soldier, is captivated by Carmen’s allure, but his duty to the military and his relationship with Micaëla, a woman from his hometown, complicate his feelings. The factory bell goes and the workers, including Carmen, head out into the streets and converse with the soldiers.

At this point, Carmen sings the famous Habanera, painting love as a ‘rebellious bird’, and throws a flower to José after the soldiers plead with her to choose a lover.

There, his talent developed as he wrote such works as the opera Don Procopio. Apart from this period in Rome, Bizet lived in the Paris area all his life. Its melodies, such as the “Habanera” and the “Toreador Song,” have been adapted and used in various forms of media, from films to commercials. Although Frasquita and Mercédès are keen to help, Carmen says she cannot as she wishes expecting to see José.

José arrives and declares his love for Carmen, who performs an exotic dance for him.

The “Toreador Song,” sung by the bullfighter Escamillo, is one of the highlights of this act. Its powerful music, compelling characters, and timeless themes have ensured its enduring popularity. In the West the "L'Arlesienne" of Roland Petit is well-regarded, and the "Symphony in C" by George Balanchine is considered to be one of the great ballets of the twentieth century.

Bizet showed the good and evil in life through his unique characters in the operas "Carmen" and "L'Arlesienne." It was his way of using the beauty of melody and harmony to capture the hearts of the people of Paris and later the world. A second symphony, Roma was not completed.

José is then arrested for dereliction of duty.

Act II

In an inn, two months later, Carmen and her friends Frasquita and Mercédès are entertaining the officers, including Zuniga, when a crowd of soldiers arrives with the flamboyant and popular bullfighter, Escamillo.

Carmen was not initially well-received but praise for it eventually came from well-known contemporaries including Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns and Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

He was the father of one son and reportedly died on his third wedding anniversary.
