She started writing her first novel 3 years later, and completed the manuscript within a year.
Nancy began writing Swordbird when she was only 10 years old. I know that Nancy wrote her story partly as a reaction to the events of 9/11. It was skillfully written; an amazing story full of imagery and spirit. When I travel throughout the world and see what happens to people because of war and violence – for example, the landmine victims in Cambodia – it breaks my heart.

It began with a letter sent to Jackie's Hong Kong office from a young fan in America:
Dear Mr.
Chan,
Hi! I'm Nancy Yi Fan, a thirteen-year-old Chinese girl who is a martial arts (swordplay) enthusiast as well as a writer. Find a quiet place to work. In 2005, she emailed her manuscript to as many publishers as she could find addresses for and luckily, it caught the eye of Jane Friedman, President and CEO of Harper Collins Publishers Worldwide.
6. As I turned each page, I kept having to remind myself that this had been penned by a youngster. I think that Nancy is an inspiration to a lot of people and she is proof that if you work hard and dream big, anything can happen! Fan's book became a New York Times Bestseller, and she was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show as one of the world's smartest kids.At the age of eleven, she sat down at her computer and began writing a manuscript that she finished a year later.
Fan emailed her manuscript to the Chief Executive Officer of HarperCollins, which led to the novel"s 50,000-copy first printing. She then began writing Sword Quest, a prequel to Swordbird, and published it two years later.
