  • Michael is clear about his responsibilities, which include dedicating time to advise Investors/Investor Groups, African companies and private equity firms on business market-entry and expansion opportunities across West Africa.
  • He also commenced a selective mentorship programme for CEOs/Senior leaders and also speaks to select audiences on telco/ICT, leadership and business growth in Africa.
  • Michael leads a team of Senior telco professionals to provide advisory/consulting services on Telecom/ICT in areas including Strategy, Technical/Commercial Due diligence, Business Operations, Policy, Regulatory and new business development.

Achievements

  • Michael has served as an advisor to several Investor Groups and companies, guiding them through the process of market entry and operations in Nigeria.

    He also drove a culture change management project to provide a strong institutional foundation for sustained continuous operational excellence. He has also worked with several Investors/company Boards in the telecom value chain/ICT to develop strategy, design appropriate operational processes, oversee business operations in support of business growth objectives.

    He developed the Mobile Money business as a strategic differentiator and growth vehicle that inures till today. Previous experience includes serving as the Board Chairman at i-Fitness Centre Ltd. and as CEO of MTN Nigeria and MTN Ghana, where operations were managed to achieve business growth objectives.

Nairmetrics reported recently that the Board of Directors of Unilever Nigeria Plc has announced the resignation of His Royal Majesty, Nnaemeka A.

Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, as a non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Board.

The resignation according to the company’s notice to the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) will take effect from 31st December 2023.

The statement signed by Mrs Afolasade Olowe, Senior Counsel, and Company Secretary reads:

  • “This is to notify the Nigerian Exchange Limited and investing public that the Board of Directors of Unilever Nigeria Plc has considered and approved the resignation of His Royal Majesty, Nnaemeka A.

    Achebe, CFR, mni, Obi of Onitsha, as a non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Board with effect from 31st December 2023.

  • The Board of Directors wishes His Royal Majesty all the very best in his retirement and would like to express their sincere gratitude to him for his leadership and the many valuable contributions he brought to the Board over the past two decades since his appointment in March 2003.
  • His Royal Majesty’s replacement on the Board of Directors of Unilever Nigeria will be announced in due course.

Michael Ikpoki serves as a Non-Executive Director at 9mobile and as a Board Adviser at Telecel Group.

Additionally, Michael holds the position of Board Chairman at Baxi by Onafriq and advises Onafriq, formerly known as MFS Africa. Within his first year as CEO of MTN Ghana, Michael instilled a strong commercial business mindset which reversed a slowing top-line growth trajectory to 15% year-on-year topline growth in 2011 and culminating in a record 21% growth in 2012.

This transformed the telecom channel landscape by creating regional distribution models, enhanced value creation to the channel and significant increase in sales for the business (average 25% annual revenue growth between 2006 and 2010). The new Regional distribution model became the Industry standard in Nigeria.

2005

In an interesting and perharps unprecedented career move, Michael was transferred laterally in July 2005 to the commercial side of the business to become General Manager, Sales & Distribution (Northern Region).

The Board of Unilever Nigeria Plc has announced the appointment of Mr. Michael Ikpoki as the interim Chairman of the company pending the appointment of a substantive Chairman of the Board.

Unilever Nigeria disclosed this in a notice to the Nigerian Exchange Limited and the investing public seen by Nairametrics

According to the statement signed by the company, Ikpoki replaces His Majesty, Nnaemeka A Achebe, Obi of Onitsha who retired from the Board effective 31st December 2023.

The statement reads:

  • “Unilever Nigeria Plc hereby notifies the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) Limited and the investing public that Mr.

    Michael Ikpoki has been appointed as Interim Chairman of the Board of Unilever Nigeria Plc. pending the appointment of a substantive Chairman of the Board. This includes identifying, recruiting and on-boarding new CEOs in these Organizations.

  • Michael has advised and mentored CEOs of growth-driven African companies in ICT and Consumer markets as well as served as an independent and objective sounding board and resource to Executive leadership teams.
  • He still serves as a telecom Industry expert in Consulting/Advisory teams, working on several projects in Africa within the Operating and Regulatory space, as well as advising telecom/ICT investors on key trends/developments in key West African markets.

      MTN Nigeria won an award at its Group Leadership Conference in 2009 for this transformational programme. Since 2016, Michael has been the CEO of Africa Context Advisory Partners. MTN Nigeria was the largest subsidiary in the MTN Group and the largest significant contributor to MTN Group’s financials at the time.

    He became the CEO of MTN Ghana (the 4th largest operation in the MTN Group).

    By November 2006, he was the Sales & Distribution Executive (Sales Director) responsible for consumer sales in the company and reporting to the CEO of MTN Nigeria as part of the Executive Committee of the company.

    2001

    Michael was also part of the pioneer Regulatory team in MTN. Michael joined MTN as a Regulatory Adviser in 2001 and grew to be a General Manager in 2004 responsible for regulatory compliance/affairs and managing MTN’s relationship with Government In these roles, he built and managed the Institutional frameworks for MTN’s regulatory relationships and was actively involved in influencing legislative review of the principal Industry legislation in 2003.

    1995

    Michael was part of the pioneer legal staff in the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) that developed the legislative/regulatory framework and processes that birthed the Nigerian Telecommunications Industry.

    In 2013, he was given the Telecom CEO of the year award at the Ghana telecom awards.
