Blossom Dearie's wispy vocals, classic repertoire, and quick wit have combined to make her a distinct stylist for over 50 years.

In the words of John Bush of the All Music Guide, "Blossom Dearie's first three records for Verve--all masterpieces--displayed an artist with an uncommon ability to transfer a well-worn standard into a new song ..." Speaking of her selection of material, Dearie told Tony Vellela of the Christian Science Monitor that "I choose material that I like.

In 1974 Dearie received praise for Blossom Dearie Sings, the first album released on her new label, Daffodil. Her older brothers heralded her arrival by filling the house with pear blossoms, and she was named Blossom Margrethe(after her mother)Dearie. Verve and Universal are releasing these albums as special "Remastered for Itunes" versions this year!

In the 1960s Blossom shared the bill with Miles Davis at the Village Vanguard.

Her mother remarked that unlike most children who would bang at the keys when in front of a piano, Blossom thoughtfully played songs from ear and memory. As well as her introduction to musical admirer, John Lennon. She is survived by her niece and nephew, Peggy and Wayne, who, not only coordinated Blossom's care at the end of her life, but are keeping Blossom's musical legacy alive through their ownership of Daffodil Records.

Christian Science Monitor, June 29, 2001, p. Lessons began around age five and she studied classical music until her teens. Later I talked to him on the phone and he said: “That was it, Blossom—I heard you play it, and I heard the whole arrangement.”

The other Evans of jazz—the one named Bill—is also a good friend of hers.

At first she performed with the Blue Flames, a group within Woody Herman's big band, and then with the Blue Reyes, a part of the Alvino Rey band. When Dearie finished high school in the mid-1940s, she moved to New York City.

In New York Dearie moved into an apartment with several other girls and started singing with various bands.

He’s developed it to a degree I admire very much. From the age of two, she showed an interest in music, sitting on her mother's lap at the piano. Speaking of Astrud Gilberto, Blossom said something which applies very much to herself: ‘It’s so refreshing and so different from the big belters.’ As evidenced recently at Annie’s Room and right now at Ronnie Scott’s club, hers is essentially a small voice, but it is employed in a wholly attractive, endearing way.

I don’t like to do either one separately. As she puts it: ‘I look for all of the qualities that a good bass player has—the sound, the intonation.
