Max Weiler was born in Hall in Tirol in 1910.

In more than seventy years of creative activity, he produced an estimated 4000 drawings covering virtually all formats and techniques and forming a collection that is on par with his paintings. But Max Weiler, in his drawings, also entered upon entirely individual paths that were adequate to the material and showed that he was able to listen deeply to his inspirations.

Max Weiler (1910–2001) numbers among his generation’s most important and productive creators of drawings: his over 70-year artistic career produced a 3,500-work drawn oeuvre that includes virtually all formats and techniques.

Max Weiler and the Albertina Museum enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship. Works on permanent loan from the Batliner Collection and the Max Weiler Private Foundation additionally enabled the Albertina to present further high points of the artist’s work, including the monumental drawings from the 1980s, such as the 10-meter-long charcoal work Naturgebild (Natural Formation), or the artist’s confident painterly work from his later stages in life.

But the first presentation of his drawn oeuvre in its entire depth and diversity was a was a retrospective in 2011, in the realization of which the artist’s widow Yvonne Weiler (who died in 2015) played a major role.

Max Weiler as a Draughtsman

The work of the painter Max Weiler (1910-2001) has been explored over the past 20 years with the help of numerous exhibitions and scholarly publications.
What has heretofore been a lesser-known fact is that he was also an eminent and fascinating draughtsman.

VIENNA.- Max Weiler (1910 – 2001) was not only a great painter, but also a fascinating and important graphic artist.

Today, the house is in possession of over a hundred drawings and printed art works by Max Weiler, work that is representative of the artist’s positions in these media.

The Albertina itself was showing a part of the drawings in exhibitions during the 1990s.

The research project which originated at the Albertina and has been supported by the Jubilee Fund of the Austrian National Bank intends to provide a comprehensive coverage, registration and scholarly investigation of the material and so to produce a first all-encompassing presentation of this large oeuvre.

In more than seventy years of creative activity, he produced a body of work covering a wide developmental arc and comprising an estimated 4,000 drawings.
Here, too, his life’s theme of the pictorial crossover between nature and spirituality took center stage, and the drawings enter into a dialogue with the paintings. But Max Weiler, in his drawings, also entered upon entirely individual paths that were adequate to the material and showed that he was able to listen deeply to his inspirations.

The research project which originated at the ALBERTINA Museum and has been supported by the Jubilee Fund of the Austrian National Bank intends to provide a comprehensive coverage, registration and scholarly investigation of the material and so to produce a first all-encompassing presentation of this large oeuvre.

Beginning in the early 1950s, the museum regularly acquired works on paper by him, thus facilitating an overview of his output.

He studied painting the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Karl Sterrer from 1930 to 1937 at and was himself appointed director of the master-class for painting there in 1964. In the ten-meter-long charcoal drawing Kunst ist Natur. Today, the house is in possession of over a hundred drawings and printed art works by Max Weiler, work that is representative of the artist’s positions in these media.



The exhibition provides insights into Max Weiler‘s entire drawing oeuvre, focusing on the development and variety of the works as well as the significance they had for the artist himself.
