Hill is currently writing a new novel and a children’s book, and co-writing a television miniseries adaptation of The Illegal for Conquering Lion Pictures. Lawrence Hill celebrates birthday on January 24 of every year.

Aminata became a bestseller in Quebec, where it won Le combat des livres on Radio-Canada.

A professor of creative writing at the University of Guelph, Hill is also a dedicated volunteer, supporting organizations like Crossroads International and the Black Loyalist Heritage Society. It was adapted into a six-part TV miniseries in 2015, co-written by Hill and director Clement Virgo, earning eleven Canadian Screen Awards and an NAACP award for best writing.

Hill has authored eleven books, including the novels The Illegal (2015), which won Canada Reads in 2016, and Beatrice and Croc Harry (2022), as well as non-fiction works like Blood: The Stuff of Life (2013), the basis for his 2013 Massey Lectures, and Dear Sir, I Intend to Burn Your Book (2013).

    His first published work of fiction, a short story entitled “My Side of the Fence,” recounted the transformative experience of working in Niger with Crossroads International. She advocated for on behalf of the Ontario government to pass anti-discrimination laws. Blood is a personal consideration of the physical, social, cultural and psychological aspects of blood, and how it defines, unites and divides us.

Lawrence Hill’s non-fiction book, Blood: The Stuff of Life was published in September 2013 by House of Anansi Press.

In 2005, he won his first literary honour: a National Magazine Award for the article “Is Africa’s Pain Black America’s Burden?” published in The Walrus. Resigning from his position as parliamentary bureau chief in 1986, Hill moved to Spain to begin writing fiction full-time.

Hill was born the year 1957 on the outskirts of Newmarket, Ontario, the second child of Daniel G.

and Donna Mae (Bender) Hill, an interracial American couple who got married in 1953. Also, she wrote on Black Canadian history; her A Black Man’s Toronto, 1914-1980: Reminiscences of Harry Gairey (1980) was published by the Multicultural History Society of Ontario.

Hill was born in Newmarket, Ontario, to an American couple who had emigrated into Toronto after emigrating from Washington, D.C., in 1953.
