One day the cupcake decides to make a boat that it uses to travel to a new land that changes him forever. Language is also limiting — and by trying to tell stories more visually without language, I think I’m able to reach a wider (and non-English speaking) audience.

KF: You seem to like juxtaposing natural materials with synthetic ones, is that intentional or something you think about when planning?

KL: I think I try to keep things as natural as possible, but am forced to resort to synthetic materials when there are no natural options available — like using silicones and urethanes for casting elements, for example.

Previously, Kirsten’s viral short Hi Stranger garnered upwards of 200 million views online, even inspiring Stephen Colbert to create a Donald Trump-centric parody on The Late Show.

In 2017, she co-directed the documentary short 100 Years with Lena Dunham. So before Lepore can even take the photos, she must think about details like rigging, lighting, and post editing.

In fact, this work took her nine months to make as part of the film was shot in New Jersey and the other part was filmed in Los Angeles. A difficulty with rigging is that it requires Adobe After Effects to erase it from the shot afterward.

She wrote and directed the Marvel Studios I Am Groot series, which won an Emmy in 2023 for Outstanding Short Form Program, and is currently streaming on Disney+.

Before this, Kirsten wrote and directed an Emmy and Annie Award-winning stop-motion episode for Cartoon Network’s hit show, Adventure Time.

Inspiration

Lepore’s inspiration for her work comes from everything that surrounds her.

Another early work of Lepore’s is her 2008 work, Sweet Dreams.

Stop and Go

Below is the transcript of my presentation on Kirsten Lepore:

Brief Biography

Kirsten Lepore is an American, Los Angeles-based stop-motion animator and director.

  • In an interview, Kirsten Lepore says that she is intrigued by stop-motion because she believes that the medium has not yet been fully explored. This story follows a girl who travels up a mountain with the goal of getting medicine that will help her. I think having them take part in the dance scene is important in communicating the role of friendship and its power in overcoming struggles.

Moreover, the themes of loneliness and devotion really echoed with me, so I connected to this work as well. Giving an animated history of Planned Parenthood, the film features an all-star cast, including America Ferrera, Mindy Kaling, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, and Constance Wu. The following year, she acted as the writer and storyboard artist for the episode, “It’s My Party,” on season one of Cartoon Network’s series Summer Camp Island.

In addition to Film and TV, Kirsten continues to focus on her commercial work.

I also like the hyper-realism that the snow and sand texture convey. The film won three Annie Awards, as well as a National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Circle award for Best Animated Picture, among others. Furthermore, you can go listen to an interview with Kirsten on the "She Does" podcast here, to get her take on this episode of Adventure Timeas well as her past films: Bottle, Move Mountain, and Sweet Dreams.

The story’s a bit autobiographical, so I figured why not pay homage to my actual friends who have helped me.

KF: So, it’s a metaphorical self portrait?

    KL: Totally.
