While there, he conducted the first known bird-banding experiment in North America, tying strings around the legs of Eastern Phoebes; he learned that the birds returned to the very same nesting sites each year.
Audubon spent more than a decade in business, eventually traveling down the Ohio River to western Kentucky – then the frontier – and setting up a dry-goods store in Henderson.
He lived on the family-owned estate at Mill Grove, near Philadelphia, where he hunted, studied and drew birds, and met his wife, Lucy Bakewell. Audubon was captivated by the beauty of birds and nature, leading him to abandon conventional business pursuits to focus on painting and studying wildlife. He is mainly remembered for his Birds of America series.
In 1824 Audubon went to Philadelphia to seek a publisher. In 1819 this venture failed and Audubon was left with only the clothes on his back, his gun, and his drawings.
Later years
With his great work finally finished in 1838, and the Ornithological Biography (a text-only book about birds) in publication, Audubon returned to America to prepare a "miniature" edition.
When Audubon began his work in the early nineteenth century, there was no such profession as a "naturalist" in America. After several years of illness, Audubon suffered a slight stroke in January 1851, followed by partial paralysis and great pain. Audubon died on January 27, 1851. John James Audubon: A Biography. For a while he supported himself in New Orleans by tutoring and painting.

"The American Woodsman" was literally an overnight success. New York: Abbeville Press, 1988. He was the son of Jean Audubon, a French adventurer, and Mademoiselle Rabin, about whom little is known except that she was a Creole and died soon after her son's birth. He is buried in the Trinity Cemetery at 155th Street and Broadway in New York City.
Audubon’s story is one of triumph over adversity; his accomplishment is destined for the ages.
It is fitting that today we carry his name and legacy into the future.
