Ancient Period (3300 BCE – 600 CE)

Indus Valley Civilization (3300-1300 BCE)

The earliest sophisticated art emerged in the Indus Valley, where urban centers like Moharjo-Daro and Harappa produced remarkable terracotta figurines, bronze sculptures, and carved seals.

His famous works are the Blue Abstract, Painting 3, Painting 4.

7. Subodh Gupta transformed everyday objects into sculptural installations commenting on consumerism and migration. Some of his paintings include Days of Glory and Mourning of Masse. Most prominent in the decoration of the railing are the carvings of yakshas and yakshis on the uprights.

Whether it was the Swadeshi movement or other aspects of the freedom struggle, he understood the influence of paintings on political and social conditions. However, after staying for many years in Europe and USA he decided to return to India, his home in 1970. The Qutub Minar in Delhi, Indo-Islamic tombs, and mosques blended Persian and Indian aesthetics, creating a unique synthesis that would reach its apex under the Mughals.

Anjolie Ela Menon

Anjolie Ela Menon is one of the most prominent contemporary artists. Ravi Varma emphasized realism in his paintings, focusing on details, the play of light and shadows, and giving depth by employing perspective. The architecture of this time includes huts of square and round shape as well as tower like structure.
