Giulio Briccialdi (1818–1881)

Giulio Briccialdi was a virtuoso flautist, composer, instrument maker and professor.

He was appointed professor of flute at the Conservatoire in Florence in 1870, and remained there until his death in 1881. Quintetto op. Performing his compositions requires great skill from flutists.

In recognition of his contributions to music, an asteroid, number 7714, was named after Giulio Briccialdi and is now called 7714 Briccialdi.

    In the early 1840s, Briccialdi became acquainted with Theobald Böhm, a Bavarian musician, composer, and inventor, and learned about the Boehm flute.

    His playing style perfectly adhered to the requirements of the Italian school, characterized by graceful elegance and powerful expression. In 1996 the asteroid N. 7714 was named in his memory.

    Duo concertant op. It will do well in the concert hall but presents no great technical difficulties. It is basically a light and airy style, Full of upbeat and appealing melodies, it sounds rather like a work from the Classical era despite its late composition date.

    We are pleased to reintroduce this charming and very appealing work for this combination.

    These include numerous concertos, fantasies from operas, caprices, romances, songs, and a multitude of challenging etudes. After his father's death, the 14-year-old Briccialdi moved to Rome to pursue a musical career and avoid family pressure to join the priesthood. While in Rome he studied composition and, in 1835, began teaching flute at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia.
