Emma proves mosaics aren’t stuck in the past—they’re alive and evolving.

Isaiah Zagar (1939– )

If you’ve ever wandered through Philadelphia and thought, “Wow, this alley looks like an art explosion,” you’ve seen Zagar’s work. The plot is on a young lady who has been separated from her partner. Her interest in material culture is also reflected in the techniques, forms, and names of her works.

She co-wrote Mosaic Techniques (Cassell, 2003) and numerous other publications with Tessa Hunkin, who joined her when she started the Mosaic Workshop in London in 1988.

Mosaic Workshop has worked on a number of high-profile assignments, including work for several of London’s Westminster Cathedral chapels.

She is a frequent instructor for short mosaic art classes at West Dean College, the Edward James Foundation’s study center.

Each issue covered a specific, and often controversial “dangerous idea,” covering race, gender inequality, and environmental issues.

Style, Impact, and Observations

Tibor Kalman was a self-proclaimed, ‘bad boy’ of graphic design in the 80s primarily because of his radical consciousness and social activism.

Other than typical stone, ceramic tesserae, enameled, and stained glass, shells, beads, charms, chains, gears, coins, and costume jewelry may be used.

He started mosaicing the fence and other sections of the abandoned properties after clearing the lots, erecting a chain-link fence, and mosaicing his own land.

In 2002, the owner of the lots asked that Zagar pay $300,000 for the property or have it destroyed. Magazines are known by many names  — circulars, periodicals, and even rags.

Carrie Reichardt has lectured on the role of craft and art in protest, most notably in March 2012 at the National Museums Liverpool’s International Women’s Day lectures.

She has also represented the United Kingdom as part of an international group of artists selected to mosaic the Argentinian Government building in Buenos Aires.

Reichardt is most known for her anarchic china, which re-fires old flowery, kitsch, royal, and religious dinnerware with layers of fresh ceramic decals.

It was billed as “the first magazine for the global village,” and Kalman used it as an outlet for his progressive ideas. His style is bold, expressive, and unmistakably modern.

Verdiano Marzi (1955– )

Verdiano Marzi grew up in Ravenna, surrounded by some of the most iconic mosaics in history. Pineles was a trailblazer as an early — and possibly the first — female Art Director of several high-profile magazines. 

Style, Impact, and Observations

Pineles’ style as a “playful modernist” developed through various uses of image and type.

Her projects range from gallery installations to public commissions, all buzzing with energy and movement. His firm, Papert Koenig Lois (PKL), became the first advertising agency to ever go public on the stock exchange.

He is most recognized for the covers he designed for Esquire magazine in the 1960s.

Style, Impact, and Observations

Fusing the image and the word, the work done for Esquire magazine has both visual and verbal expressiveness that are indivisible from each other.

He created a truly distinctive look that was both bold and elegant. The painters that worked in this church are generally unknown, however at least one group of artists came from Rome.

Because the work at San Francesco was similar to that of Florentine Gothic artist Giotto, he was traditionally attributed with sections of the frescoes, although most scholars today believe he was not involved.
