Outdoor Murals

Recinos previously designed the murals, now at Santo Domingo del Cerro, for an international competition. Check out the big bio here. Love a great pizza.

I’m not going to tell you if I took it for a spin or not.

But I will tell you that not a soul came by in the 15 minutes I spent inside the museum…

The Miguel Asturias Museum features artifacts once belonging to Miguel Asturias, Guatemala’s Nobel Prize-winning writer.

Below is an image of Saint Betancourt, which sits right above the chapel.

Artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and other Renaissance masters created naturalistic representations of their subjects.

Pablo Picasso is lauded for laying the foundation for modern figurative art in the 1920s. A piece of figurative art can be an exciting starting point for setting a tone and creating a color palette in a room.

Efraín Recinos

Efraín Enrique Recinos Valenzuela (May 15, 1928 – October 2, 2011) was a Guatemalan contemporary architect, muralist, urbanist, painter and sculptor.

Recinos' works adorn the facades and interiors of many of Guatemala's landmark buildings, including the National Library of Guatemala.

Imagine Leonardo DaVinci, but with athletic skills.

And he also designed Guatemala’s coolest building, the National Theater (Centro Cultural Miguel Angel Asturias). View more posts

Figurative art, as opposed to abstract art, retains features from the observable world in its representational depictions of subject matter.

Known as Guatemala’s Picasso, he’s one of Guatemala’s most beloved artist. The government considers the theater as a National Heritage site.

Additionally, Recinos also painted the murals located in the Guatemalan National Music Conservatory. Recinos designed the large, white structure set on a hill to resemble a jaguar, using insipiration from more traditional Mayan motifs.

I looked at the picture closely, and the chair was certainly the same design.

The small bathroom inside the museum had been cordoned off. Notice La Merced Church, the distinctive yellow building near the center of the picture.

You also get a clear view of always-smoky Volcan Fuego, which put on a show last September (2012) and most recently in July 2017.

El Tenedor del Cerro

El Tenedor del Cerro (translated as “Hill’s Fork”) is a white-tablecloth restaurant, open Tuesday through Sunday.

He was an architect, sculptor, painter, muralist, inventor and all-around artistic legend.

Oh, and he was also an Olympic athlete (triathlon), and a member of the National Basketball team. Of course, if you want to enjoy the Italian restaurant at the summit you’ll have to pay. All rolled into one, Santo Domingo del Cerro has a restaurant “Tenedor del Cerro,” two museums, art gallery, aviary, zip lines, playgrounds for kids, event facilities, and all around marvelous place to spend a lazy morning or afternoon – all for the grand price of $0.

Yup, no admission charge.

However, he is best known as the architect of the Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias, which serves as the county's national theater and largest cultural complex, opened in 1978. The government of Guatemala awarded him the Order of the Quetzal, one of the country's highest honors for his artistic contributions during his career.

Recinos was born in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, in 1928.

I recommend it since it’s a very long, steep walk if you attempt to walk your way up the hill.
