Lloyd Webber comes from a musical family: his father was the director of the London College of Music, his mother was a piano teacher and his younger brother, Julian, is a renowned cellist.
Andrew Lloyd Webber: Is she?
You have met her many times. The culmination of his personal and professional experiences has shaped not only his character but has also offered him inspiration for many of his creative works.
So I thought it’s got to be a slightly lilting tango and that’s when I wrote “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” but I had all those thoughts in my head.
And then did you write it in an afternoon?
Andrew Lloyd Webber: Yeah, I wrote the melody fairly quickly, and I sketched, actually, that afternoon. Or were you that confident?
But coming back to your point about does one change of course, it’s quite interesting that the musical director who’s been appointed to do the Cats movie is also going to be helping me on the piece that I’m currently writing at the moment or more or less finishing at the moment, which is a completely new Cinderella, which is great, great fun, I hope, and not quite the Cinderella that everybody might have seen in the past.
And when the trailer was sort of, you know, as completely kind of considered to be as sensational as it was, you know, and as controversial as it’s been, I was sort of thinking gosh, I’ve taken some pretty controversial subjects. He also formed the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and his theater production company, the Really Useful Group, is one of the largest operating in London.
Early Years
Andrew Lloyd Webber was born on March 22, 1948, in London.
But you know that’s a story that is interesting and that my take on it I think was very, very different and I don’t think they would have wanted me to have done it. The current situations mask the fact that $150 million in investment was lost last year on Broadway and I’m very worried I’m going to admit, I’m very worried about the future because at the moment there’s no original new works, something Hal Prince was very, very worried about.
This is the problem.

But the answer is no. Do you like cats?
Andrew Lloyd Webber: I do. It’s funny what I … I suppose my mind is very attuned to and loves melody. That’s another issue altogether. I mean, you could tell it’s different from the style that I was writing in say 40 years ago.
And how do you keep up with the zeitgeist?
But we haven’t written a full-length piece or anything substantial together in, well, gosh, 1976. But I would never, for example, let Evita go or the score of Jesus Christ Superstar go.
