Tibbles came West in his teens to fight against slavery, often alongside John Brown, in "Bleeding Kansas." He served as a scout and guide in the Civil War, and after the war worked as a journalist in Omaha.
Taken prisoner by pro-slavery forces, he was sentenced to be hanged but escaped.
After the end of the Kansas hostilities, he spent some time with the Omaha, even accompanying them in a conflict with the Sioux.
He was later active, among other things, as a Methodist preacher in the frontier territory before turning to journalism.
This was a fight about slavery on the border between Kansas and Missouri. That same year, Tibbles published his second book, Hidden Power, under his own name.
In the summer of 1879, he went on a speaking tour. He became very involved in the Populist movement. He helped raise over $80,000 to help these people. He was People's Party nominee for Vice-President of the United States (1904). Later, he became a Presbyterian and built a church in Omaha.
In 1874, Tibbles saw that many people in Nebraska were starving.
