She was one of the first six women to join the NASA astronaut corps in 1978 and holds the distinction of being the first American woman to walk in space.
Individuals are invited to join the Honorary Board through a rigorous internal process. As managing director, Goldfuss helped develop and implement the Obama administration’s environmental and energy policies, including the Climate Action Plan, then-President Barack Obama’s major initiative to combat climate change.
It’s an election year. Not only NRDC, but all the various groups across the climate and justice movement to be more focused, more able to partner and work together and stronger as we look at the fight ahead, which is pretty existential.
Christy White Goldfuss served as managing director of the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) from March 2015 until the Obama administration left office in 2017.
Goldfuss is from Darien, Connecticut, where she graduated from Darien High School in 1995 after being student body president.
She advised on the completion of the first two regional marine plans in New England and the Mid-Atlantic and assisted in collecting community input for the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts National Monument and Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.
Goldfuss drove the first family’s strategy for engagement in the celebration of the National Park Service’s Centennial.

Dr. During her tenure, the USGS responded to a number of major disasters, including earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and Japan, and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The layoffs came as NRDC orchestrated a broader reorganization that its leaders hope will streamline the group’s work and reset its strategy as NRDC and other environmental groups shift from fighting for climate legislation to helping maximize the emission reductions from the massive climate law enacted last year.
For her contributions, she was awarded the U.S. Coast Guard’s Meritorious Service Medal.
Dr. Candidates must be highly accomplished individuals and meet the minimum criteria of the WAN Woman of the Year Award.
The Honorary Board was established in 2018 with founding members Christy Goldfuss, Dr.
Marcia McNutt, and Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan. She co-chaired the Council on Climate Preparedness and Resilience and identified priorities for protecting the country against the worst impacts of climate change.
While leading the CEQ, she advised on the creation of the National Environmental Policy Act climate guidance and testified repeatedly in the U.S.
House of Representatives defending it. While there, she also championed a policy enacted by the administration to give fourth-graders yearly passes to national parks.
Lynne currently serves as the Program Manager for the Hydrographic Services Review Panel, a Federal Advisory Committee at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that advises the NOAA Administrator.

She was a reporter for stations in Redding, California; Reno, Nevada; and Richmond, Virginia.
Goldfuss left broadcasting in 2006 to work for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, later Environment America, where she worked to counter some of the environmental policies being enacted by the George W. Bush administration, including logging in the Alaska wilderness.
As 2023 draws to a close, NRDC’s Christy Goldfuss is hopeful that morale is on the mend and that the group is in a stronger position as it heads into what she sees as an “existential” fight ahead. [There will be] new leaders in some cases, in some cases very seasoned leaders who will be in those roles. She also coordinated policy discussions on ozone pollution levels, the review of the coal leasing program, and conservation finance, to name a few.
In the beginning of January, people will be moving into a new structure that we’ve been working on for months now. While at the White House, this included a focus on engaging younger generations in their parks and public lands.
Prior to her work at the CEQ, Goldfuss was the deputy director of the National Park Service, where she helped lead efforts to set and meet strategic goals related to conservation and preservation of America’s natural and cultural heritage.
And not even just hopefully, I know from conversations as we’re closing out the year that people are excited about the new structure, having a rationality, getting through this difficult phase and really focusing on what we know the work is for next year, which is going to be really a tough year.
