Mr Poppo does not blame Eugene for what happened, said Adolfa Sigue, nurse manager at the Jackson Memorial Perdue Medical Centre, where he lives.
"The only thing that he always tells me is that, 'I'm sure that that man had a bad day that day,"' Ms Sigue said.
Mr Poppo, 66, still requires daily medical care for his wounds, and he is working with occupational therapists and specialists from the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind to learn how to adjust to his blindness.
He has not allowed any visitors to see him, other than his doctors, nurses and therapists.
Ms Sigue said he does not answer the telephone in his room and has not wanted to talk with relatives other than a sister, who calls the nurse's mobile phone to get through.
Mr Poppo's caretakers describe him as a charming, cooperative patient who enjoys listening to Miami Heat basketball games on the radio.
He can stay at the medical centre indefinitely.
On Tuesday, Jackson Memorial Perdue Medical Center, where Poppo continues to undergo treatment, released a video that shows him wearing a Miami Heat cap, strumming a guitar and thanking the community for its support.
"He's had a long year, but he's managed to cope quite well with what's happened to him," one of Poppo's caretakers said Tuesday during a press conference updating the community on his condition.
Well-wishers have been responding to the video on Twitter, using #wishes4poppo.

New pictures and a video of a homeless man whose face was almost chewed off in a horrifying attack in Miami last year have been released.
Ronald Poppo lost his left eye, his nose and most of the surrounding skin when a naked man attacked him for no reason alongside a motorway.
He's still receiving care today from Florida's Jackson Health System, which published an album of new photos of Poppo on Tuesday. Lab tests found only marijuana in his system.

He continues to work with an occupational therapist, who taught him how to dress himself, feed himself, shower and shave. He spent nearly a month at Ryder, recovering from severe facial injuries, before being moved to Jackson Memorial Perdue Medical Center, a long-term care facility in Cutler Bay. Mr. Poppo, who is blind, remains at Perdue, where he is living happily and adjusting to his new life.
He continues to see doctors at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center to treat his facial injuries.

It was one of the most bizarre stories of last year -- even for Florida.
On May 26, 2012,Ronald Poppo was homeless and living on Miami's MacArthur Causeway when he was attacked by a naked man who bit off parts of his face.
Callers reported seeing a naked Eugene swinging from a lamp post minutes before the attack. He was also left blind in his remaining eye.
In a video posted online by the hospital caring for him, Mr Poppo strummed a guitar, joked with his nurses and, although he wears a baseball cap, leaves his face uncovered to address the camera.

Nearly a year ago, 65-year-old homeless man Ronald Poppo was brutally attacked by 31-year-old Rudy Eugene on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami.

Mr Poppo spent nearly a month in hospital after the attack, before moving to a long-term care facility.
His doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine praised Mr Poppo for his resilience and said he is satisfied with the surgeries and skin grafts that have closed his wounds.
Mr Poppo could still use his own tissues or prosthetics to replace his nose or eye, but he is not interested in more facial reconstruction, doctors said.
Dr Wrood Kassira, a plastic surgeon, said: "There's still work that can be done, but he's more than happy with how he is now, and he's quite grateful."
A Miami police officer shot and killed Mr Poppo's attacker, 31-year-old Rudy Eugene.
It is still not clear what provoked the attack.
Video footage would later show a nearly naked Eugene chewing on Poppo's face, ripping off his flesh and gouging out his eyes. It also left the suspect, Rudy Eugene, shot dead by police.
Now, nearly a year later, Poppo is speaking publicly for the first time.

The crime left Poppo without his left eye, his nose and much of the skin on his face. His care is covered by Medicaid, and a Jackson Memorial Foundation fund has raised $100,000 (£66,000) for his medical expenses.
Eugene was shot and killed by police.
