Anouilh was of Basque descent.
Early Life and Education
At the age of 15, Jean Anouilh moved to Paris, where he completed his schooling. The play ends with the Chorus onstage with the guards. The Chorus speaks of Antigone, explaining that as long as there are tyrants, there will be someone like Antigone to rise up and oppose them.
He also wrote screenplays for several films, including "Monsieur Vincent" (1947) and "The Little Molière" (1959).
Later Years and Legacy
Jean Anouilh passed away in 1987 at the age of 77 in his home in Lausanne. Also onstage is King Creon, who believes that he is only on the throne because he will not turn away from his duty. Ismene tells her sister that they must not bury Polynices and that she should think of her betrothed, Haemon.
His work during this period, such as his well-known work, Antigone, was a thinly-veiled attack against all French people that collaborated with the Germans.

Haemon insists upon the strength of his love.Antigone tells Nurse not to worry about where she was earlier. In 1928, he married actress Monelle Valentin. His plays continue to be performed worldwide, and some of them have been staged in Russian theaters, such as "Antigone," which was performed at the Moscow Art Theatre in 2001. As a young man, his family moved to Paris, where Jean attended secondary school and law school.
This experience inspired him to begin writing his own plays.
Anouilh served briefly in World War II; by the end of the war, however, he returned to Paris, disillusioned and distraught over the Nazi occupation of France. She found Antigone’s bed empty and has grown worried. Shocked but obedient, Haemon leaves Antigone alone. Creon is outraged and demands that the guard keep the story a secret.
Meanwhile, the guards continue to play cards—this tragedy means nothing to them.

Jean Anouilh was a French playwright, screenwriter, and prominent figure in 20th-century French literature.
The Chorus foreshadows the pride that will be Creon’s downfall. Antigone admits that she stole the items from Ismene to make Haemon love her more, for she is insecure that she might not be as attractive as her sister. Performed under censorship in Nazi-occupied France, the play is famed for its seemingly ambiguous portrayal of the authority figure, Creon (, as he confronts authority-defying martyr, Antigone (said to represent the oppressed people of France).
Antigone sits alone while the Chorus explains how she will soon confront her uncle, Creon, the current King.
Creon and his Page enter. They reconcile, having had a fight the night before.
