When you read aloud, be sure to point out that authors of biographies generally write the story of the person’s life from beginning to end. While both biographies and autobiographies provide insight into someone’s life, autobiographies are more intimate and personal, whereas biographies can offer a broader and more objective perspective.
Why are Biographies Important for Students?
There are so many benefits of teaching biographies!
Also, you can choose to have one set passage for the entire class throughout the week, or you can send home a few for parents and children to pick. I love picture books because students can generally read them in one session. (Make sure you preview the text first and mark with sticky notes to remember to stop and discuss during the read-aloud!) Some of my favorites are Martin’s Big Words, The Story of Ruby Bridges.

7. What do all the books have in common?
It typically focuses on important events, achievements, and experiences that shaped that person. Usually the person has done something positive and admirable and is an inspiration to others.
In order to create a biography, students will learn about the person’s early life, childhood, education, family, and accomplishments. Your students will feel fulfilled when they finish their biographies and see all the hard work that went into that challenging (but fun!) project!

Be sure to tell students the difference between biographies and autobiographies too. You will find plenty of biographies that fit right in with your next Social Studies Unit or for a Biography Unit!
Once you have finished sharing your biography read-aloud, ask your students to create a timeline of events in the person’s life from the book.
They then draw objects in the hands that relate to the person and create a background that tells the viewer more about the historical figure.

are necessities for my lessons. She also did not talk until she was three. It is important for the student to fully be interested in learning about the person, so it is best if students choose on their own. Your high flyers will get a bit of a challenge identifying seven events, while your struggling students can still do the same activity focusing on five key events.
