In 2001, she won the Golden Kite Award.

This involves scratching lines into a dark surface to create images. These are made with the same process as my originals; by photocopying the final black-and-white scratchboard onto acid-free paper (Astrolite by Monadnock Paper), mounting the paper with archival materials onto Strathmore Series 500 Bristol Board, and hand-painting with watercolor.

I'm still amazed and humbled that in 2009 my sixth book,The House in the Nightby Susan Marie Swanson, won theCaldecott Medal.

At age 62, I went back to college to earn an AAS degree in Textile/Surface Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.  Working with the incredible FIT professors and my talented classmates from around the world was the experience of a lifetime.

Her art often has a magical, detailed look.

    Awards and Recognition

Beth Krommes has received several top awards for her work. My artist's proofs are not the original art sent to the publisher, but are alike in every way. They are enjoyed by children and adults alike.

    Biography

I have loved art since my early childhood in Emmaus, PA.

I earned a BFA in painting from Syracuse University and an MAT in art education from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She loved art from a young age. Here are some of her notable works:

    • Grandmother Winter (1999), written by Phyllis Root. There, she earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Her unique style quickly became popular. I will never make more than five artist's proofs from any one illustration. This was for her illustrations in the book The Lamp, the Ice, and the Boat Called Fish. She earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

      Her Career as an Illustrator

Beth Krommes started illustrating children's books in 1989.

She went to Syracuse University to study painting.
