On 8 April 1973, he died of a heart attack at his home near Cannes.
Picassos Parisian studio attracted the major figures of the avant-garde at this time, including Matisse, Braque, Apollinaire, and Gertrude Stein.
His notable later works include Rape of the Sabines (1963; Picasso Mus., Paris) and Young Bather with Sand Shovel (1971; private collection, France). Soon, Picasso lost all desire to do any schoolwork, choosing to spend the school days doodling in his notebook instead.
They had a daughter, Maya, together. The profits Picasso earned from a series of etchings and prints on the Guernica theme made in the 1930s went to help the Republican cause.
In his later years Picasso turned to creations of fantasy and comic invention.
He has no real style. I do a picture, then I destroy it. But what he is.
A precocious draftsman, Picasso was admitted to the advanced classes at the Royal Academy of Art in Barcelona at 15.
Pablo Picasso
(1881-1973)
Who Was Pablo Picasso?
Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer considered one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century. He later adopted his mother's maiden name of Picasso.
These works appeared simultaneously with synthetic cubist paintings. Picasso worked closely with the French artist Georges Braque in the development of this style. "I liked it there, because I took along a sketch pad and drew incessantly ... In 1937, he produced 'Guernica', a painting inspired by the destruction of the town in northern Spain by German bombers during the Spanish Civil War.
Picasso supported the Republican government fighting General Francisco Franco, and never returned to Spain after Franco's victory. In the 1920s he drew heavily on classical themes and produced magnificent monumental nudes and monsters that were reminiscent of antiquity and rendered with a certain anguished irony.
