The book was a bestseller and won major awards in Israel, applauded by both sides of the political spectrum.
Among the awards he won are the Israeli Prime Minister’s Creative Award for Authors, the Israeli Bernstein Prize for The Hilltop, and the DAAD artists-in-Berlin fellowship in Germany. Following his studies in London and Vancouver, the son of English immigrants made a name for himself writing a column about fast food in a local magazine in Jerusalem.While Assaf Gavron’s second published work »Min Bebet Haalmin« (2000; Sex in the Cemetery) presents the everyday lives of young Israelis living far from their homeland in a collection of lucid and cutting short stories, the novel that followed, »Moving« (2003), was a highly-charged, absurd, fast-paced and witty story about a Jewish removal company in New York.
It was short listed for the Adei-Wizo Prize in Italy (2010) and long listed for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize in the US (2011).
Apart from his original works, Gavron is a literary translator from English to Hebrew.
Between 2000–2004 he was a creative director for Israeli high-tech company Valis. Studied BA in Media and Communication in Goldsmiths' College in London, UK (1991–1994), and New Media in Vancouver, Canada (1997).
Assaf Gavron was Born in 1968, and published seven novels (Ice, Moving, Almost Dead, Hydromania, The Hilltop, Eighteen Lashes and Don't You Want Me), a Novela (Hamelet - The Cement), collection of short stories (Sex in the cemetery), and a non-fiction collection of Jerusalem falafel-joint reviews (Eating Standing Up).
His fiction and non-fiction has been translated into 16 languages.
His latest English translation, The Hilltop, was published in 2014 by Scribner.
Among the awards he won are the Israeli Prime Minister’s Creative Award for Authors, the Israeli Bernstein Prize for The Hilltop, the DAAD artists-in-Berlin fellowship in Germany, the Buch Fur Die Stadt award in Germany for CrocAttack and the Prix Courrier International award in France for the same novel.
His fiction was adapted for the stage in Habima – Israel’s national theatre, and five of his novels were optioned for film or TV by Israeli and international film producers.
As a translator of fiction, Gavron is responsible for the highly-regarded English-to-Hebrew translations of J.D.
Salinger’s Nine Stories, Philip Roth’s Portnoy’s Complaint and Jonathan Safran Foer’s novels, among others.
Gavron was the chief writer of the prize-winning computer game Peacemaker and has contributed to numerous newspapers and magazines in Israel and around the world.
The other is a Palestinian who, trapped between indignity, liberation pathos and love for his family, gets caught up in an attempt to kill the apparently immortal and always escaping Israeli. One of them is a Jewish man whose life starts to fall apart when he becomes the hero of Israeli resistance because he has survived several brutal attacks.
Gavron then caused a stir with »CrocAttack« (2006), in which he interweaves the story of two men – provocatively and subtly in equal measure. Gavron has worked creating video games and as a rock musician; he has also translated American novels (Portnoy's Complaint among them) into Hebrew.
He lives in Tel Aviv with his wife and two daughters.
He is the founder of Israel’s national writers’ and poets’ soccer team. Gavron's book Almost Dead (HarperCollins, 2010) was chosen by the LA Times as one of the 10 best books of the year. In the game, the players, either as the Israeli Prime Minister or the Palestinian President, face the challenge of peacefully resolving the simulated Middle East conflict by reacting to real pieces of news.
He teaches creative writing in universities in the US and in Israel.
He is the singer and main songwriter of cult pop group The Mouth and Foot. What is more, he is also the singer and songwriter in Israeli band The Mouth and was involved in the concept design of the computer game »PeaceMaker«. He spent several semesters teaching at American univerities, including the University of Nebraska, and San Diego State University. While his primary residence is in Tel Aviv, Gavron also lived in London, Vancouver, and Berlin.
