Early Life and Education
Alphonse Gabriel Capone, better known as Al Capone, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 17, 1899.
Torrio knew Capone did not mind violence and often had him beat up people who were unable to repay loans. Torrio taught Capone the importance of maintaining a respectable front while running a racketeering business. During the trial Capone used the best weapon in his arsenal: bribery and intimidation. It proved to be the right decision as the authorities did not have enough evidence to charge him.
After Torrio retired in 1925, Capone assumed leadership of the Chicago Outfit, employing brutal tactics to eliminate rivals and expand his influence. Capone attended school through the sixth grade, at which point he beat up his teacher one day and was himself beaten by the school's principal afterward. Capone was soon incarcerated in the Eastern Penitentiary, where he stayed until March 16, 1930.
However, his notoriety skyrocketed following events such as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre in 1929, solidifying his status as a violent crime lord. Angered by the gap between the American dream and his own reality, Capone began to engage in criminal activities as a way of achieving success in what he saw as an unjust society.
His ability to evade law enforcement and manipulate the political system further entrenched his power. The overconfident Capone, who believed he would receive less than five years in prison, became less cocky when he realized that his plea bargain was now null and void.
On October 6, 1931, 14 detectives escorted Capone to the Federal Court Building.

In 1923, when Chicago elected a reformist mayor who announced that he planned to rid the city of corruption, Torrio and Capone moved their base beyond the city limits to suburban Cicero.
Protecting these businesses also often involved either bribing or beating up public officials. This criminal enterprise not only allowed him to achieve wealth but also established his notorious reputation as America’s most infamous gangster. His income stemmed from a wide array of illegal operations including bootlegging, gambling, and prostitution.

Death
Capone died at age 48 on January 25, 1947, in Palm Island, Florida.
