Yetnebersh Nigussie
In 2005, Nigussie co-founded the Ethiopian Centre for Disability and Development (ECDD) in order to address the weak cooperation between disability organisations, specialised service providers and mainstream development programmes.

The organisation expanded its programmes from Addis Ababa to four other regions in the country. Furthermore, ECDD started publishing the ‘– listing how accessible official buildings, hotels and restaurants were to people with disabilities. Out of that exposure, she decided to found a local organization called Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD) along with other prominent Ethiopians to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities in different development programmes including economic empowerment.

She describes this instance as an opportunity as it helped her to escape from the early marriage which was widely exercised in Amhara Saint Wollo, at the place where Yetnebersh was born. Nigussie and the other founding members of ECDD decided to design the organisation in a way that would reflect, both in structure and programmes, the following values: majority governance by persons with disabilities, gender equality, and positive bias (affirmative action) in staff employment.
From 2013–2014, she was Goodwill Ambassador for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management organising committee. In 2013, she was central in setting up the Ethiopian Charities & Societies Forum, ECSF, an umbrella organisation aimed to take on Ethiopian civil society’s concerns and challenges, and served as its first chair.
She was also heavily involved in establishing the new accessibility directives for Ethiopia’s building code, which require all new buildings to be accessible to persons with disabilities.

Yetnebersh Nigussie (Amharic: የትነበርሽ ንጉሴ; born 24 January 1982) is an Ethiopian lawyer and disability rights activist.
Besides her academic life, Ms. Yetnebersh served in more than 20 organizations voluntarily out of which the Ethiopian National Association of the Blind Women’s Wing happened to be the one she chaired for 4 years (2003–07).
