The 81-year old was an El Pasoan through and through and he always had a spot at the baseline of the Don Haskins Center when he was in the arena to watch his alma mater.
Cager was as colorful a personality as you would find, always laughing and telling stories about his days playing for a young Don Haskins. Cager spent toward the beginning of today on the 57-year commemoration of the 1966 title.

Willie Cager an American b-ball player died at 81 years old. However, last March, the Willie Cager Endowed Basketball Scholarship was announced by the Miner Athletic Club.
He is an individual from the 1965-66 Texas Western public title winning group.
He was one of the five Dark starters in the title game. He also started in the famed 1966 NCAA Championship game and finished with eight points and six rebounds against Kentucky.
The thing I will remember most about Cager is his quiet yet confident personality.
His team, which for the first time played only black players against the all-white Kentucky Wildcats, prevailed, toppling the racial barriers in college athletics. TexasWesternstarted an all-black starting lineup, against the all-white University of Kentucky. He was trained by the Corridor of Acclaim mentor Wear Haskins.

I will miss the stories, the laugh, and the man that made El Paso his home for 60 years. He is expelled from high school before the end of his freshman year, dashing any dreams of ever playing college ball, or so he thought.
Informed by word of mouth of his phenomenal talent, a Division I university in Texas takes a chance on the young man with the abnormal heart and no high school diploma.
He loved to talk basketball and also about his early days growing up in the Bronx. He showed up in 77 games for the Excavators from 1965-68. He was coached by the Hall of Fame coach Don Haskins. He began the game close by Orsten Artis, Bobby Joe Slope, Dave Lattin, and Willie Worsley. The school's websitedescribes him as "A skilled low post player" during his career.
Following the insight about Willie Cager’s passing, recognitions started pouring in online for the ball player, with fans giving sympathies to loved ones. He also created the Willie Cager Foundation o raise money in order to build several multi-purpose athletic and academic complexes for El Paso's youngsters.
The college offers him a scholarship.
Just two years later, he leaps from streets of New York to a court in College Park, Maryland, playing before 14,253 fans in the 1966 NCAA Basketball Championship.
