This is how he did it. He studied chemical engineering at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and took an executive course at the Asian Institute of Management.

I love Tony’s story.

During his studies, Tony had the chance to visit the ice cream plant of Magnolia, an ice-cream parlor franchise company.

In 1993, it was listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange. In 2019, Jollibee Foods Corporation had more than 4,000 branches worldwide for all brands including Los Angeles-based Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf which was bought that year.

Tony Tan Caktiong is married and has three children. His remarkable journey, from a small ice cream parlor to a global food empire, serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs.

All three failed, and Jollibee eventually discontinued them.

It was a total failure and customers were so angry they brought the chickenjoy back right away.

Business

Jollibee operates in 33 countries (Philippines, United States, Canada, China, United Kingdom, Italy, Vietnam, Brunei, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Panama, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, and India).

But don’t be scared to make mistakes, just be quick to recognize them and learn from them as fast as you can.

When Tony was in high school, his dad worked as a cook in a Buddhist temple. So Tony added sandwiches and hot meals to the menu, and they soon became more popular than ice cream.

A year later, the hot food worked so well that Tony gave up on the ice cream, revoked the franchises, and opened his own fast-food restaurant.

While McDonald’s sold US food, Jollibee focused on food Filipinos enjoyed. From starting a small ice cream parlor to leading one of the world’s largest fast-food chains, Tony Tan’s vision, resilience, and innovative approach have made him a global business leader.

Born in Singapore and later moving to the Philippines, Tan entered the food service industry in 1975 with an ice cream shop.

After the purchase of Mang Inasal, Tony became co-chairman of DoubleDragon.

They use different means to operate as many restaurants as possible.

Jollibee subsequently created several joint ventures in 2019 and 2021 to develop foreign restaurant chains in the Philippines.

The business seemed so good that they went back to the Philippines and copied everything from McDonald’s except for one thing: the menu.

Conclusion

Tony is often credited for the following quote. The brand quickly gained popularity, particularly with its signature Chickenjoy, becoming the country’s top fast-food chain by the 1980s, surpassing international competitors like McDonald’s.

Determined to make Jollibee a global brand, Tony Tan led the company’s expansion abroad, opening its first overseas location in California in 1998 to cater to the Filipino diaspora.

In the next decade as it opened one branch after another, its red and white mascot became a familiar site in every busy street of all cities and major towns all over the Philippines.

Jollibee entered the Philippines’ top 500 corporation in 1985.
