Founded in 1874, Pillsbury Madison & Sutro Limited Liability Partnership has grown to become one of the largest law firms in the United States, with more than 560 attorneys and expertise in virtually every area of the law. Rembe initially thought that the firm was joking, but learned that she would have been the first Gentile attorney in the all-Jewish law firm.

Toni Rembe – President

Toni has served as Trustee since 1971 and as President since 1994.

Her board service includes the Gagarin Trust, IGNITE: Political Power in Every Young Woman, and Co-Chair of the MNA Advisory Board at USF. A third generation San Franciscan, Nancy has deep roots in the City and a passion for cooking, making ceramics, and bringing people together for good conversation.

Angela Hom – Administrative Assistant

Angela joined the Foundation in August 2022 after working for fourteen years in records management at the University of California Office of the President (UCOP).

A graduate of UCLA Law School, Ms. Brown’s experience as a public interest attorney include litigation and administrative advocacy on behalf of tenants and homeowners, public benefits advocacy, community organizing, fair housing advocacy, community workshops, and trainings and technical assistance for professionals. Many have practical experience as engineers, microbiologists, physicists, computer experts and chemists.

Ms. Brown has organized and opened a community development credit union, designed and taught a course on mortgage lending and homeownership at UC Berkeley School of Law and served for five years on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Consumer Advisory Board, functioning as Chair in her final year. Angela immigrated from Hong Kong, grew up in East Los Angeles and is a first generation college graduate of Scripps College in Claremont.

Dan was the Executive Director of the van Löben Sels/RembeRock Foundation from 1995 to 2010, after which he remained on the Foundation Board as a Trustee until retiring in March 2017.

With offices in seven California cities, New York, Washington, District of Columbia, and two offices in Asia, Hong Kong and Tokyo, the firm combines a strong domestic practice with a dynamic presence in the rapidly changing international markets.

Julie Divola – Secretary

Julie has been a van Löben Sels/RembeRock Foundation trustee since 2009 and currently serves as Board Secretary and member of the Audit Committee.

Background

Rembe, Toni was born on April 23, 1936 in Seattle, Washington, United States. Fellow American Bar Foundation; member American Bar Association, American Judicature Society, State Bar California, Bar Association San Francisco, Commonwealth Club of California (Governors of theclub). Beyond her work as a lawyer, Irma has written on race, class, gender, and various social justice issues for New America Media previously known as Pacific News Service.

Biotechnology. In 1961, after receiving a graduate degree in taxation at New York University School of Law, Rembe joined the firm of Chadbourne, Parke, Whiteside & Wolff (later Chadbourne & Parke) in New York City. Bachelor of Laws, 1960).

Career

Worked at Pillsbury Madison & Sutro Limited Liability Partnership (San Francisco, California) specializing in General Civil Practice and Litigation in all State and Federal Courts.

She is a retired partner in the law firm of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, LLP; a co-founder and member of the Advisory Board of the Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University; a member of the National Council for the American Theater; and a member of the advisory board (and former co-chair) of Corporate Women Directors International and a member of the board of Magic Theatre.

Dan has been an invaluable asset to the Foundation throughout his years of service and we wish him all the best as he moves on to the next chapter.

Gail Shuster

The Foundation’s longtime Grants Manager retired as of April 18, 2016.

Education

University of Geneva (C.E.P., 1957). Irma currently serves on the board of Oakland-based Public Interest Law Project (PILP).

Maeve Elise Brown – Director

Maeve Elise Brown, Executive Director and a founder of Housing and Economic Rights Advocates (HERA), manages operations, supervises staff and participates in the organization’s substantive work.

Tom also sits on the California Endowment’s Independent Review Committee. He returned to Pillsbury in 1998. We are grateful for her years of service and will miss having her at the Foundation.

Richard W. Odgers – December 31, 1936 – September 7, 2014

Dick Odgers, former Secretary, served as Trustee since 1994.
