As is the case in the movie, the Grady daughters haunted the Overlook Hotel in King's novel after they were killed. The identifiable nature of a moniker does wonders in transforming the characters from more than just mere mentions as they were in the novel.

Delbert tells Jack that he has two daughters and that "they're somewhere around." Jack tells Delbert that he was in the newspaper for chopping up his wife and daughter to bits, but Delbert has no recollection of the event. There, they revealed that they were cast during an open call, and that the film’s adaptation took creative liberties — in Stephen King’s original novel, the Grady sisters aren’t actually twins but two girls aged eight and ten.

It was Kubrick’s decision to make them twins, and it proved to be a stroke of genius.

It’s in their synchronized movements, the way they lock eyes with you, and their eerie words that stick with you, even after the movie ends. Rather, the reader only knows about the girls through dialogue between Jack Torrance and Bill Watson, the descendant of the man who built the Overlook. Lisa and Louise’s portrayal of the Grady Twins showcases their talent as young actors, and contributes significantly to the film’s unsettling ambiance.

Life After Hollywood

Following their brief stint in Hollywood, Lisa and Louise made a conscious decision to step away from acting and explore other interests.

They both speak in a cold, monotone cadence with no inflection, which also makes them feel totally soulless.

The audience knows that the girls were murdered with an axe in cold blood, so they shouldn't inherently seem evil. Delbert says,"My own girls, didn't care for the Overlook at first. They become fully realized characters who are significantly more interesting in the movie than they are in the book.
