Breakthrough and Career Highlights

Sylvester Stallone’s big break came in 1976 with “Rocky,” a film he wrote and starred in as the underdog boxer Rocky Balboa.

However, it was Rocky (1976) that marked his breakthrough. For this latest installment, Stallone took the company on location to the inner jungles of Burma basing the compelling story in a country where crimes against humanity, civil war and genocide have existed for over 60 years – and no one is doing anything about it.

Stallone then released his most ambitious project to date, the action thriller The Expendables, which he wrote, directed and starred in, and for which he hired an all star cast including Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Eric Roberts, Dolph Lungren and Steve Austin – as well as Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

As actor and co-writer, Stallone filmed F.I.S.T, First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rhinestone and Rambo III. Written in just a few days and inspired by the life of boxer Chuck Wepner, the screenplay led to a film that Stallone insisted he star in. He attended the American College in Switzerland and later studied drama at the University of Miami.

In 1979, he returned with Rocky II, which he also directed, further solidifying his place in Hollywood.

The success of Rocky was followed by the debut of another signature character, John Rambo, in 1982’s First Blood. He later studied at the American College of Switzerland (1965–1967) and then at the University of Miami, majoring in drama from 1967 to 1969.

His mother was of French (from Brittany) and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. Struggling with bullying during his childhood, Stallone channeled his frustration into bodybuilding and eventually, acting.

He was baptized as a Catholic. Stallone rose to international fame in 1976 with his portrayal of underdog boxer Rocky Balboa in the original Rocky film, which he also wrote.

2015’s Creed was shot on location in Philadelphia for director Ryan Coogler, and featured Stallone reprising his role as Rocky Balboa opposite actor Michael B. Jordan.

He gained additional stage experience in the off-Broadway play Score in 1971, which led to a film adaptation.

Early in his career, he performed under the names Mike Stallone and later Sylvester E. Stallone.

Early Career and Breakthrough with Rocky

Stallone’s acting career began modestly in 1970 when he accepted a role in the low-budget adult film The Party at Kitty and Stud’s, a choice he later said was made out of financial desperation.

Both films were for the Warner Bros. At the 2010 Comicon Convention, he was the first inductee into the IGN Action Hero Hall of Fame.

The Expendables 2, the highly-anticipated sequel opened to Number One at the Box Office. Stallone attended Notre Dame Academy, Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, and Charlotte Hall Military Academy, before enrolling at Miami Dade College.

The opportunity first came in 1974 when he was cast as one of the leads in The Lords of Flatbush. He also had minor roles in notable movies, including Woody Allen's Bananas and Alan Pakula’s thriller Klute.

By 1975, Stallone had appeared in several supporting roles in films such as The Prisoner of Second Avenue, Capone, Farewell, My Lovely, and Death Race 2000.
