The entire tale has since been covered by HBO in the documentary, Beware the Slenderman.
Since the “Waukesha Stabbing,” other Slender Man-related crimes have been reported, including a June 2014 stabbing of a mother by her own 13-year-old daughter, a September 2014 incident in which a 14-year-old girl set fire to her family’s house, and a rash of 2015 suicide attempts at the Indian reservation at Pine Ridge, in which the character was frequently named as a primary inspiration, resembling the “suicide spirit” that was part of their traditions.
Beyond the Creepypasta
Despite these terrible stories – or perhaps at least in part because of them – Slender Man quickly captured the imagination and slipped his way into pop culture through games, television, music, and much more.
Created by Something Awful forums user Victor Surge in 2009. However, the character got his first real big break in 2013 with the arrival of the game: Slender: The Eight Pages. As users scrambled to add ghouls, ghosts, and demons, Eric Knudsen decided to go with a slender figure without a face and tentacles on his back. Slender Man The Game Slender: The Eight Pages is set in the middle of a dense forest during the middle of the night, and is played from a first person perspective.
The Slender Man is depicted as a black suit wearing, thin and unnaturally tall humanoid with a completely blank head and face. The player’s objective is to collect all eight pages located in various areas of the forest while avoiding the Slender Man. As the player collects pages, the fog in the forest grows thicker, and Slender Man appears closer to the player’s character, though the character’s sprinting speed slowly increases as well.
Surge supplemented his submission with snatches of text—supposedly from witnesses—describing the abductions of the groups of children and giving the character the name “The Slender Man”: The quote under the first photograph read: We didn’t want to go, we didn’t want to kill them, but its persistent silence and outstretched arms horrified and comforted us at the same time… — 1983, photographer unknown, presumed dead.
The Origins Of Slender Man The Slender Man originated as a creepypasta internet meme in 2009. “I saw some of the pictures in the thread and just decided to make something that I would find creepy.”
Never Knudsen thought so many people would be inspired by his character — or that some would take their enthusiasm too far.
Slender Man Legend in The Making
If Knudsen is responsible for giving Slender Man a face, the internet and its users are responsible for developing the character into a worldwide phenomenon.
Only ten days after Knudsen posted his picture, Marble Hornets YouTube channel featured a spooky web series in which a creepy figure named The Operator scares and causes havoc.
Produced by three film students from Alabama, Marble Hornets blew the Slender Man phenomenon out of proportion, making it into an online myth.

After Marble Hornets, other Slender Man inspired-videos appeared all over the web.
Notable for being taken the day which fourteen children vanished and for what is referred to as “The Slender Man”. Suddenly one of them disappears, and the others start believing Slender Man is real.
