MTN Group: A Pan-African Success Story

The MTN Group was founded in 1994 and has since grown to become a leading telecommunications provider with investments in 22 markets across Africa, including Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, the Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, South Sudan, Eswatini, Uganda, and Zambia.

Mr. Dabengwa served as Chief Operating Officer of MTN Group Ltd. until March 31, 2011. The fine was later reduced to $3,9bn. Between receiving his first degree and his second, Dabengwa spent a few years serving as a trainee on the British Rail, and eventually on the Zimbabwe Railways.[2]

Career

Dabengwa, BB.Sc., served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of MTN Group Ltd. from March 31, 2011, to November 9, 2015. He served as Managing Director of MTN SA of MTN Group Ltd.

Mr Dabengwa served as Chief Operating Officer-South Africa of MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd. He served as Chief Executive Officer of -MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd. since November 1, 2004, and also served as its Managing Director. Mr Dabengwa holds B.Sc. His leadership played a crucial role in shaping the company’s strategy and ensuring its continued growth and success.

Contributions Beyond Telecommunications

In addition to his work with MTN, Dabengwa was also a respected business leader in other sectors.

He served as the CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015. Prior to MTN, he served several years at Eskom, whereas a Member of Eskom's Management Board, where Mr Dabengwa was responsible for all of its distribution operations, including sales, customer service, marketing, engineering and technology. Dabengwa’s contributions to the telecommunications industry and his vision for Africa’s digital future ensure his legacy will endure.

MTN workers strike against Dabengwa

Workers on strike at MTN demanded that Dabengwa returned to his home country of Zimbabwe, claiming that he didn’t believe in giving his employees a decent, living wage. Dabengwa was the Group President and Chief Executive Officer of MTN Group until November 2015. In 2015, MTN faced a record US$5.2 billion fine from Nigerian authorities for failing to disconnect unregistered SIM cards.

He serves as a Non-Executive Director of Peermont Global Limited. Under his leadership, MTN expanded its services across Africa and the Middle East, serving nearly 220 million subscribers.

Dabengwa’s tenure was not without challenges.
