Early Life and Education
Born in Kent, Connecticut, Seth MacFarlane attended Kent School, where he faced criticism for his "stupid" humor.
But perhaps his most atypical project was a revival of Carl Sagan’s popular show “Cosmos,” in an effort to underscore the importance of science.
Scandal
As a comedian, MacFarlane’s humor has sometimes gotten him into trouble: he has been named in various lawsuits and his sometimes offensive shows have been the subject of boycott attempts.
In 2007, he served as executive producer on the Rob Corddry series “The Winner,” but it failed after just six episodes. MacFarlane not only created the show but also stars in it as Captain Ed Mercer.
His voice for Brian is nearly identical to his own speaking voice.
"American Dad!"
In 2005, MacFarlane premiered his follow-up series, "American Dad!," after the 39th Super Bowl. The answer is no—MacFarlane has never tied the knot. This renewed interest resuscitated the show, and Fox made the shocking move to bring new episodes of the series to TV in 2005.
“American Dad”
MacFarlane also unveiled a new show that year: “American Dad” eventually became a success, with MacFarlane again taking on voice roles and skewering right-wing politics.
Change of Pace
With two hit cartoons, MacFarlane set out to do something different.
Every time he tries to cook up something, he gets interrupted by his sister, Dee Dee.
Another hilarious show that he was part of was the rowdy Johnny Bravo. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), MacFarlane was hired by Hanna-Barbera, where he began writing and storyboarding for several fan-favorite cartoons throughout the mid-1990s.
One of his earliest projects was working on Dexter’s Laboratory, the quirky Cartoon Network show about a young super genius who built a laboratory in his bedroom.
MacFarlane also made waves in Hollywood with Ted (2012), a comedy starring Mark Wahlberg about a vulgar-mouthed teddy bear.
If you’ve ever laughed at a talking baby trying to take over the world or a beer-loving dog dishing out life advice, then you’ve already had a taste of Seth MacFarlane’s wild imagination. While it didn’t quite reach the heights of its parent series, the show still ran for four seasons and gave us some memorable moments.
The show revolves around the Smith family, with Stan Smith as a hyper-conservative CIA agent, who lives with his family, an alien who saved his life, and a talking goldfish with the transplanted brain of an East German Olympic skier. It’s a surprising twist that shows just how wide Disney’s reach has become in today’s entertainment world.
Family Guy is available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.
Rahul is an Entertainment Writer at FandomWire who has already made his mark covering some of the most talked-about TV shows around, especially the gems coming out of Apple TV+.
In under a year, he’s tackled everything from breaking news to evergreen features and listicles that keep readers clicking. While his hands-on role has shifted over the years, he remains a key creative force behind the show, which is currently airing its 23rd season.
However, FOX still plays an active role in airing the show. Not only did he write and direct the film, but he also voiced Ted himself.
Here, he lends his voice to both Stan Smith, the patriotic and over-the-top CIA agent, and Roger, the chaotic alien roommate who somehow steals every scene he’s in. His student film had started gaining attention, and it was only a matter of time before someone snapped him up. The series aired on Cartoon Network and World Premiere Toons.
The Birth of "Family Guy"
Impressed by the "Larry" shorts, Fox producers approached MacFarlane to create a series based on the characters.

In 2014, Seth MacFarlane was sued with a lawsuit from the production company of a series of Internet videos titled 'Charlie the Abusive Teddy Bear,' in which they claimed that Seth's film titled 'Ted' (2012) infringed on the copyright of its videos due to Ted largely matching the background story, persona, voice tone, attitude, and dialogue of the Charlie bear in the Internet series.
