Marjoe Gortner was a child preacher.
Vernon abandoned the family, taking all the money they had earned (approximately three million dollars) and leaving Marjoe, his mother, and his brother destitute.
Marjoe left the church when he was around 16. He would smoke dope on the beach and hang out with his friends, but then suddenly he would need money again, and that was the only way he knew how to make money.

To watch these swindlers is infuriating, in that their con is aimed at vulnerable people, those who are in varying conditions of physical and/or mental pain. And I kind of envied them. If the preacher drives a Cadillac, you’ll drive a Cadillac.
