In 2009, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, becoming the second Rap act, after Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, to be so honored. That same year Run DMC also starred in a movie by the same name.

Childhood friends Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels were barely 16 when they started rhyming together at loosely organized DJ jams in their neighborhood of Hollis, Queens, in New York City.

“Is Sting still running around trying to be The Police? (Simmons would go on to found Def Jam Recordings, becoming one of America’s premier black entrepreneurs.) The trio of Run, D.M.C. The trio of Joseph Simmons, Daryl McDaniels and Jason Mizell – along with producers Russell Simmons and Larry Smith  (who DJ Premier would describe as the greatest hip-hop producer of all time) – went into the studio with the intention of, essentially, removing the studio from the equation.

With “Walk This Way,” Run DMC actually found themselves charting higher on the pop chart (#4) than the R&B chart (#8). didn’t invent hip-hop. They just didn’t understand this big, enormous rock guitar thing that was happening and weaving in between their raps.”

They got over that and incorporated rock tactics regularly going forward, most notably by collaborating with Aerosmith on a cover of “Walk This Way” – considered a triumph by some, a jump-the-shark moment by others.

Members include DMC (born, Darryl Mc Daniel May 31, 1964 in Hollis, NY), vocals; Jam Master Jay (born Jason Mizell, January 21, 1965 in Hollis, NY), turntables; Run (born Joseph Simmons, November 14, 1964 in Hollis, NY), vocals.

But the albums that followed never quite captured the magic of their early days, in part because they often sounded like older dudes trying to recapture their glory days, particularly on the muddled Back From Hell. They swore off party themes in favor of an almost journalistic depiction of life in their ‘hood and those of their friends.

Run DMC emerged as one of the most innovative rap groups on the American musical scene in the early 1980s. “People got to understand this—is Dave Grohl still running around trying to be Nirvana?” McDaniels asks in Rock the Bells.

The sound of "Rock Box" indicated things to come as the group sought to incorporate the rock sound of the electric guitar in the song. While not the inventors of the rap music genre, Run DMC was most definitely its pioneer with distinctively sparse beats and a savvy penchant for incorporating rock and heavy metal lyrical samples and music into their highly acclaimed and wildly popular pop cultural vignettes.

One, with large homes on sprawling lots, was home to moneyed folks like the Cuomo political dynasty, the other – hardscrabble, but not quite ghetto – housed the new generation of rap.

That proximity had a lot to do with the creation of Run-D.M.C.’s most lasting track, “Rock Box.” That tune changed the game entirely by introducing the idea of integrating hard rock and hard beats into a sonic package that tapped into the pumped-up – but not angry – zeitgeist of hormonally-charged youth, regardless of race.

The group changed all of that when they released albums that were not solely comprised of a single or two surrounded by substandard filler material.
