His mother was from a British family in Calcutta, India. In an attempt to change this, he agreed to star with Tony Curtis on ITC's The Persuaders! Later, when James Gardner left the Maverick' cast, the producers of the series invited Roger Moore to star in it as Beau Maverick, an English cousin. He would later go onto become a captain in the service.

Despite his fame from the Bond films and many others, the United States never completely took to him until he starred in The Cannonball Run (1981) alongside Burt Reynolds, a success there.
