From Freedom House, the funeral procession then continued to the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal, where the official ceremony and viewing of the body took place.
Speaking at that forum, President Donald Ramotar recalled the hard years of struggle and said Pandit ‘Reep’ fought tenaciously against colonialism and for the restoration of democracy in Guyana, and he continued the struggle and had made contributions in all the sectors.
The President asserted that Persaud could neither be bought nor threatened.
The Dharmic Rama Krishna Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools and the Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra are established centers of academic excellence and cultural learning.
According to PPP stalwart, who is also Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon, Pandit ‘Reep’ had worked his way into Guyana’s history, and his personal attributes had endeared him to legions of people everywhere.
Former Opposition Leader Robert Corbin waxed lyrical and quoted poetry during his delivery, and said that Persaud was a pandit of unquestionable patriotism, who was deeply religious, with strong political convictions.
Under 40 years of visionary leadership by Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud and dedication of the founding members, Harry Ramdass, Dalin Chand Persaud, Mohanlall Sahadeo, Sukhdeo Ramsaroop, Rambaran, Sital Persaud, Mahase, C. Ramsaroop, Luckie Narine, Harry Persaud and M. Ramsay, a solid foundation emerged and was sustained and expanded under the dynamic ten-year stewardship of Dr.
Vindhya Vasini Persaud.
The leadership and membership of the Sabha’s nine Praants, Mahila Mandalees, Dharmic Naujawaans and affiliated mandirs must be lauded for their dedication, over 5 decades, in promulgating and sustaining the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s impressive array of programmes and initiatives. The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s iconic Diwali Motorcade is a beautiful and tangible symbol of unity and celebration of light across Guyana.
Although its primary mission revolves around the education of Hindus in the values and concepts of Hinduism, over the years, Dharmic Sabha expanded the ambit of its work to include areas of education, social issues, health and wellbeing, and community service.
He would later form a Foundation in his name as part of an education drive. He served as Agriculture Minister then Minister of Parliamentary Affairs under the Peoples Progressive Party Government.
Just last year, as part of a new initiative by Speaker of the National Assembly Rapahel Trotman to honour past Members, Persaud was celebrated and honoured by the Full House for his 41 years of service as a Member of the Parliament of Guyana.
During that ceremony, Home Affairs Minister and long-time PPP member Clement Rohee reflected on Persaud’s contributions to Guyana pointing out that as “the son of a humble indentured immigrant from India, Reepu Daman Persaud made an indelible impact in all the struggles of this country and can be best known as a noble Guyanese son and patriot who has helped to bring our country to where it is”.

Rupert Roopnarine said then that Persaud will always be remembered as a diligent and committed politician and religious leader who loved his country.
President Donald Ramotar at a Special Religious function in 2012 celebrating Persaud’s work said Reepu Daman Persaud “managed to skillfully blend religious and cultural needs to the needs of the whole country and brought it to be part of the general movement that eventually brought freedom to Guyana”
Reepu Daman Persaud formed the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha and worked tirelessly over the years as both a politician, patriot and religious leader according to close friends.
He expressed pleasure that Persaud’s contributions were recognised in his lifetime by the National Assembly.
Former president Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo was in vintage form as he described Pt. ‘Reep’ as someone who was respected, adored and loved across Guyana and in the wider world.
Dr. Dharmic Sabha extends its heartfelt gratitude to its members, volunteers and supporters for their invaluable contributions over the years.
His work with the party, said the President, was the way he lived out his religious convictions.
‘Action thy duty, reward not thy concern’, the motto of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha (a major, far-reaching and powerful Hindu Organisation that Pandit Reep founded), fits the principle and practice of the PPP. According to President Ramotar, Reepu Daman Persaud became the confidante of Dr.
Jagan, and described him as a great orator who was never wrong on constitutional law.
One of Persaud’s greatest achievements in the National Assembly was to bring back the Hansard to Parliament after an absence for many years, revealed the President.
Representing the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, Mrs. Chandra Gajraj, said that Hindus believe in the immortality of the soul and that ‘Pandit’ had revolutionised Hinduism in Guyana.
She believes he has attained Moksha because he was a great soul. We are reminded of Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud’s first anniversary remarks – “the future is boundless and the opportunities unlimited.”

In 1996, Persaud received Guyana’s second highest National Award, The Order of Roraima which celebrated his work in the National Assembly for decades. Founded under the leadership of the Late Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud on January 8, 1974 under Aadra Nakshatra (a star favorable to Bhagwan Shiva), the Guyana Dharmic Sabha today commemorates half century of unwavering dedication and service to the Hindu community and to Guyana.
The attainment of this momentous milestone is a testament to Dharmic Sabha’s enduring commitment to and consistency in preserving and promoting Hindu culture, traditions, values and ideals.
Persaud had fallen ill early Saturday and was initially taken to the Mercy Hospital but later transferred to the Georgetown Hospital for further tests and assessment at the Caribbean Heart Institute.
Reepu Daman Persaud was one of the longest serving career politicians in Guyana and served as a Member of Parliament for decades before retiring a few years ago.

Persaud served as Minister of Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs until he bowed out of active politics about seven years ago due to poor health.
Nevertheless, he continued to be a member of the Central Committee of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP), a position he held for more than 50 years.
“He managed to skilfully blend religious and cultural needs to the needs of the whole country and brought it to be part of the general movement that eventually brought freedom to Guyana…our second Independence in October 1992…if we forget those days we will be at peril,” President Donald Ramotar said one year ago at a special birthday ceremony by the Dharmic Sabha in honour of Persaud.
Persaud and former leader of the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR), Robert Corbin were in July 2012 honoured by the National Assembly for their 41 and 38 years service respectively as parliamentarians.
Persaud served as Chief Whip, Deputy Speaker, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Chairman of the Constitution Reform Select Committee and Leader of the House and, over a 14-year span, Vice- President, Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.
