In 1930 a friend asked him to fix a broken carving of a santo (saint) and Barela enjoyed it so much that he started making his own religious images.

Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States—becoming the first African American to serve in that office—on January 20, 2009.
The son of a white American mother and a black Kenyan father, Obama grew up in Hawaii.
The homespun values they instilled in him, paired with his innate sense of optimism, compelled Obama to devote his life to giving every child, regardless of his or her background, the same chance America gave him.
After working his way through college with the help of scholarships and student loans, Obama moved to Chicago, where he worked with a group of churches to help rebuild communities devastated by the closure of local steel plants.
He also devoted energy to raising money and planning for the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, Illinois.

As President Obama has said, the change we seek will take longer than one term or one presidency. By the summer of 1936 Barela’s sculptures were on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, and in September of that year they appeared in New Horizons in American Art at MoMA.

“An integral figure in twentieth-century Hispanic and New Mexican art history, Patrociño Barela rose to art world celebrity in the 1930s, an unlikely prospect for someone of his background.
Born in Hawaii to a mother from Kansas and a father from Kenya, Obama was raised with help from his grandparents, whose generosity of spirit reflected their Midwestern roots. Barela created sculptures based on current events as well as stories from the Bible. The Obama years were ones in which more people not only began to see themselves in the changing face of America, but to see America the way he always has — as the only place on Earth where so many of our stories could even be possible.
