He’d again collaborate with Cosma on the 1974 sequel, The Return of the Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe. He gives legendary concerts in New York’s Carnegie Hall, in Royal Albert Hall in London, in Paris’s Olympia, in Shanghai, Tokyo and Cape Town.
“The Lonely Shepherd” gives it an understated grandeur.
You had an international hit with "The Lonely Shepherd." Did its second life in film and television surprise you? There was one catch, however: Zamfir would have to give up the accordion and adopt a new instrument, the pan flute (or pan pipe, called nai in Romanian), if he wanted to enroll.
On the face of it, nothing. These include the Romanian variation, the nai. Zamfir’s tracks have their origins in a particular tradition but here they sound like they might be melodies as old as Pangea, The sound of Zamfir helps sweep the girls away. Most of Zamfir's releases in the 1990s and beyond have been compilations of his past works, although he has continued to release albums of both traditional and popular music.
Generally reclusive from the media, Zamfir made headlines in November of 2002 when he was denied an entry visa into Israel for a concert series.
In his spare time, Zamfir experimented with adding additional pipes to his flutes, which traditionally had just 20 tubes. With Zamfir, music lovers and music critics are in agreement: He is one of the most important representatives of a wind instrument that for a long time played only a minor role in music until Zamfir brought it to the great stages of the world and displayed his multi-faceted magic there.
In the meantime, the famous pan flutist can look back upon 50 years on the stage.
The nai has had a centuries-old place in Romanian music, but waned in popularity in the 19th century.
It was the self-taught Luca who helped turn that around in the 20th century, first by taking pan flute music to the rest of Europe, the 1939 New York World’s Fair, China, Russia, and elsewhere.
Feelings like love, passion, admiration, contemplation, and introspection can be easily evoked with a Pan Flute sound background. These two were always going to have this moment. It was a difficult decision for the teenager, but he agreed to the condition and became the pupil of flute master Fanica Luca.
Zamfir made rapid progress on the pan flute and within four years was already considered a top musician on the instrument within Romania.
This pairing of instruments, though not originally composed for the film, became iconic in its association with Picnic at Hanging Rock. Zamfir received, among others, the distinctions of “Chevalier des Arts et Lettres de France” and “Most Popular Composer and Artist of the 20th Century”.
Even his excursions into popular music, the expression of Zamfir’s pronounced love of experimentation, have been positively received by critics and fans.
The ads made some improbable statements about Zamfir's worldwide record sales and the easy-listening, instrumental arrangements of popular and classical songs struck some critics as cloying. He chose to feature the pan flute, played by me, alongside an Eastern European cymbalum, to evoke a sense of Romanian musical heritage. Most were for familiar names.
