I think it’s about retraining people how they react to you, how they react to a situation and sort of retraining. I think comedy is very tough.
The S&B: What’s the biggest difference you see between writing for TV and writing novels?
NTS: Well, writing the novels, it was just so singular. I did enjoy it, but I enjoyed it because of the team I put together.
And there are a lot of people who aren’t, and they don’t know better, and they do it. That’s not fact.” And so she’s a trained journalist who goes down the road of opinion and not fact, and how that just upends everything she touches. Like, just shining a light on the behavior, but in a humorous way, which lands softer and makes the point, and doesn’t turn it into a contentious situation that stops the room, stops the flow of work, or turns it into a toxic environment.
There’s a murder. And so we wanted, with these eight episodes to keep throwing it back in your face that these people were real. We slumber party and we watch all this stuff. August 27, 2021. And we used humor to sort of break through a situation that was uncomfortable or that could be viewed as sexist or racist. I’ve had the luxury of great bosses and great showrunners to learn from.
How did you cast Aaron Paul?
Zack [Van Amburg] and Jamie [Erlicht] had a working relationship with him when they were at Sony and made Breaking Bad.
It was just really intimate and personal and it was just me and a blank page, and I steered the ship and decided what the story was, who these characters were and where they were going. There’s no editor or fellow team of reporters, or publisher, who says, “Hey, that’s your opinion. And once you go outside the writers’ room, you have the network and the studio who weigh in, and once it goes from there, you have the cast that weighs in, so it’s not an arena where you can be as precious about your work.
The S&B: What draws you to the crime/noir genre?
Nichelle Tramble Spellman: Well, with “The Dying Ground”, I initially wrote that as a coming-of-age novel. And if we both acknowledge that we’re scared, then we’ll treat the material respectfully.” We signed Octavia from the pitch and Aaron and Lizzy from the pilot script.

In the end, did you feel that showrunning was for you?

I found out what I was made of, for sure. It’s usually like the seed of an idea about a character in a certain situation and how they would react. December 6, 2019.
Good Wife was my favorite room. In the book, it plays more from the point of view of the sisters.
Did you change the character of Poppy at all as you expanded her role?There were some changes that we made because it had to be specific to the actress.
