Rise to fame and notoriety

Mata Hari’s fame soared between 1905 and 1912, during which she performed in the major capitals of Europe.

Agents from the Deuxième Bureau met Zelle and told her that if she agreed to spy for France, she would be allowed to visit Maslov.

Due to the war, Zelle had performed as Mata Hari in front of Crown Prince Wilhelm, Kaiser Wilhelm II's eldest son and supposedly a top German general on the Western Front. Because Vittel is in the military zone, Margaretha needs a special travel permit.

By 1910, there were plenty of imitators. The couple doesn't waste any time and six days later they are engaged. In the light of the First World War, the precise truth is not very important.

Whether viewed as a cunning seductress or a tragic figure caught in the tumult of war, Mata Hari remains one of history’s most enigmatic figures. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the climate of fear and paranoia during the war worked against her. The bank freezes her assets and, to her indignation, Germany confiscates her belongings, including her precious fur coats.

But her numerous affairs with men in uniform and her travels through Europe during World War I make her suspicious in the eyes of the French secret service.
