Mil Máscaras
Since the early 1900s, Mexican luchadores have been revered as idols in their home country, but the masked sensation known as Mil Máscaras was the first of them to translate his regional success into international stardom.
He quickly resumed his winning ways and regained the title by defeating the Sheik on April 25,1969. This ability to draw a crowd had promoters clamoring for his name on the card, leading Mil Máscaras to make his U.S. debut in Los Angeles in 1968.
With his high-flying dives and dazzling flips, the Mexican competitor was an exciting change of pace for the California crowds who were more accustomed to the ground-based attacks of grapplers like John Tolos and Gene LeBell.
Entitled Mil Máscaras, the movie revealed that the mystery man was actually an orphan who was raised by a team of scientists to become a superhuman athlete. You talk about a shoot or half-shoot, and that’s the kind of match that it was.”
Mil Mascaras was in such demand that he would travel constantly around the world to wrestle, commanding top money as he was a great box office draw.
His charismatic presence and wrestling skills combined with his colorful wrestling attire (which included beautiful capes, ring jackets, and an incredible selection of masks) to help him make an immediate impact and attract a huge following. While he ventured there less frequently, he never neglected his home country of Mexico and one of his returns there included a match with Lou Thesz on July 26, 1975 for the UWA Heavyweight title that resulted in a draw.
1975 would also see Mascaras winning the IWA heavyweight title, a title that he would successfully defend against such standouts as Ernie Ladd and former WWWF Heavyweight Champion Ivan Koloff.
Legends like Tiger Mask and Ultimo Dragon may have never existed had it not been for Mil Máscaras. The fans who lined up at movie theaters to watch Mil Máscaras rumble with the undead also paid to see him compete in the ring, which translated to major box-office success for the agile grappler.
With his high-flying dives and dazzling flips, the Mexican competitor was an exciting change of pace for the California crowds who were more accustomed to the ground-based attacks of grapplers like John Tolos and Gene LeBell. Athletic, colorful and explosive in the ring, “The Man of 1,000 Masks” established himself as a major attraction in the United States, Japan and other corners of the globe in the 1970s and paved the way for the future success of Mexican competitors like Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero and his nephew, Alberto Del Rio.
Making his ring debut in Guadalajara in the mid-1960s, the competitor quickly became a cultural phenomenon thanks to a 1966 film that presented his origin story.
area) on June 6, 1968.
Mascaras would hold the title for 3 months before losing it to El Mongol and leaving the area before returning to L.A. in the early part of 1969. Following the picture’s success, other more outlandish films followed, including 1968’s Las Momias de Guanajuato, which featured the luchador battling mummies while wearing his trademark mask.

Mascaras would win the title yet a second time from El Nazi on October 15, 1967 before eventually vacating the title on March 22, 1968 as he set his sights on wrestling in the United States.
Mil Mascaras would arrive in Mike LeBelle’s Southern California territory in the Spring of 1968 bringing with him an exciting repertoire of high flying lucha moves and wrestling holds and counters.
Throughout the decade, Mil Máscaras continued to be a big draw for the sports-entertainment powerhouse and came very close to becoming WWE Champion during a series of competitive matches with “Superstar” Billy Graham.
Mil Máscaras has won a total of 7 championships in major promotions during his career.
Mil Máscaras was inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012 as an individual, in the NWA Hall of Fame in 2009 and in the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame (PWHF) in 2010 as part of the International wing.
This ability to draw a crowd had promoters clamoring for his name on the card, leading Mil Máscaras to make his U.S. debut in Los Angeles in 1968. As his reputation grew, Mil Máscaras made his way to Tokyo where his wild offense and flashy ring gear inspired a whole new generation of competitors in Japan.
