He also played in a five-piece R&B/calypso group as a teenager. He played mainly jazz in the 1980s, ’90s, but also did his fair share of R&B sessions throughout the years. He also recorded music with other artists, including Eric Allison and his brother Jesse Jones Jr. His last album, The Travelling Man, was recorded in 2012.

Mustafa has played in many of the international Jazz Festival which include the Playboy Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Ravina Jazz Festival, SS Norway Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Lugano Jazz Festival (Italy), Pori Jazz Festival, Charlie Mingus Epitaph Orchestra in Russia and many others.

As a traveling artist, Mustafa manages to conduct his duties as an educator, Mustafa is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at Florida Memorial University where he teaches Music Theory, Jazz Composition and other jazz related courses.

This festival helped raise money for college and high school jazz students. He then performed in New York City with musicians like Bobby Watson.

Mustafa was a member of the Duke Ellington ghost Orchestra, which was directed by Mercer Ellington. He worked with many other great jazz artists like George Cables and John Hicks.

His Own Music Albums

In 1995, Melton Mustafa released his own big band album called Boiling Point. These included Betty Wright and Latimore, Joe Simon, Joe Simon, and Sam & Dave.

He was the younger brother of another musician, saxophonist Jesse Jones Jr.. Melton started learning the trumpet when he was in middle school. After signing with Contemporary/Fantasy, Mustafa recorded his first album a leader, Boiling Point, in 1995, followed by St. Louis Blues in 1997.

Melton Mustafa-Trumpet player extraordinaire, arranger/composer, producer, and educator.

As a teenager, he played in a band with his brother that performed RnB and calypso music.

He studied music at Berklee College of Music and Mississippi Valley State College. Louis Blues, in 1997. He played the trumpet and flugelhorn, which is like a trumpet but with a softer sound. Mustafa has played in many of the international Jazz Festival which include the Playboy Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Ravina Jazz Festival, SS Norway Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Lugano Jazz Festival (Italy), Pori Jazz Festival, Charlie Mingus Epitaph Orchestra in Russia and many others.

Mustafa was a backing singer for many soul artists during the late ’60s to ’70s. Some of the guest artists that appeared at the Festival from (1996-2009) were, Jon Faddis, Abraham Laboriel, Benny Golson, Dr. Nathan Davis, Dr. Grover Washington Jr., Dr. James Moody, Idris Muhammad, George Cables, Wallace Roney, Patrice Rushen, Geri Allen, Jimmy Owens, Billy Cobham, Herbie Mann, Dr.

Billy Taylor, Clarke Terry, Curtis Fuller, Nestor Torres, Winard Harper, Najee, Randy Brecker, and others.
