Mattea is one of the most respected female country stars, a commercially successful hitmaker who was able to bring elements of folk, bluegrass, gospel, and singer/songwriter intimacy to her music.
Its middle-of-the-road sound failed to find an audience; Mattea's future at Mercury might have been brief had she not been invited to open for country star George Strait in many of his road concerts.
Two events saved Mattea's career: her touring with Strait and her decision to reach for a more traditional folk style. He started a publishing company underneath the apartment in which Mattea lived in the 1980s, and the two met after he jump-started her car.
First was “Love at the Five and Dime”, written and originally recorded by Nanci Griffith on her 1986 album The Last of the True Believers.
Walk the Way the Wind Blows followed it, “You’re the Power”, and “Train of Memories”. She is a two-time Grammy Award winner: in 1990 for "Where've You Been", and in 1993 for her Christmas album "Good News".
Vezner wrote four of Mattea’s singles: “Where’ve You Been”, “Whole Lotta Holes”, “Time Passes By”, and “A Few Good Things Remain”, along with singles by Diamond Rio and Clay Walker.

She attended West Virginia University, and in 1976, she joined a bluegrass band, and two years later dropped out of school to move to Nashville. "Where've You Been"--a stark departure from standard country fare--is a plaintive work about a loving husband and wife placed on different floors in a nursing home after 60 happy years of marriage.
What little singing she could find was usually back-up work and commercial jingles. "I don't feel like what I do is a sexual thing," she said.
Mattea was in no way an overnight success, however. All four of these songs reached the top 10 of the country music charts between 1986 and 1987. Street Talk "faded pretty quickly," to quote Andrew Vaughan in Who's Who in New Country Music.
