Martha is the good student. She is still as feisty and as honest and as ethical a person as she was when I was in third grade. She wanted to go to work, but she waited. Within a decade, Martha Stewart, Inc., had grown into a $1 million business serving a number of corporate and celebrity clients.

Stewart expanded into the world of publishing with her first book, Entertaining, which became a bestseller and was followed in quick succession by such publications as Martha Stewart's Quick Cook Menus, Martha Stewart's Hors d'Oeuvres, Martha Stewart's Christmas and Martha Stewart's Wedding Planner.

I would find a quiet place. So that was a good experience.

In our house the teacher was always right.

We started a television show.

Martha Stewart: Not in business. There was no complaining about your teachers because both of my parents were teachers and we did not pick on our teachers. I didn’t — wasn’t very happy in the stock market. I tell you, my daughter is 28 years old, she has the same lifestyle. The process was emotionally challenging for both parties, particularly Martha, who expressed being deeply hurt by the experience.

And women have now found that out.

We have an entity now, a public entity. While at Barnard, she met Andy Stewart, a Yale law student, and the two married in 1961. So I really pursued that idea as a career, until I got to college.

I just saw my third grade teacher last year at my mother’s 80th birthday party. I was the first to pass that test; at a very young age I was allowed to go into the adult library.

We had a lot of chores at our house, a tremendous number of chores, but we were always granted the time to read.

She was a spinster, but that never deterred in her love of all the other children. Where I was totally the opposite.

I was brought up with religion. She has dark brown eyes that are often considered captivating, along with brown hair.

Career

Stewart has had a diverse and successful career spanning multiple fields.

I’m not a sponge exactly, but I find that something I look at — just walking around Williamsburg, for example — is a great opportunity for ideas.
