He is widely known for his coming-of-age feature film Summer Storm (2004 film), his Amazon Prime series Beat (TV series) which won him Germany’s prestigious Grimme Preis, and the critically acclaimed Netflix series Bodies (2023 TV series). 

 

His feature films Krabat (film) starring Daniel Brühl and The Collini Case with Elyas M’Barek, Alexandra Maria Lara and film legend Franco Nero were box office hits in their original territory Germany.

One of the company"s first projects is a Brazilian-German co-production with the working title Her Name Was Lola.

The film is a romantic comedy which will be filmed in English, and deals with a woman from London, who falls in love with a young man from Rio de Janeiro. Foreign this film, Kreuzpaintner was awarded with the Cinema for Peace Special Award by the Hessischer Filmpreis.

Biography

Marco Johann Kreuzpaintner (born 11 March 1977) is a Bafta-winning film director, executive producer and screenwriter.

However, as he was involved in preparation for directing 10.000 British Columbia at the time, another director was sought, and Emmerich chose Kreuzpaintner, having met him previously in Munich in 2003.

On October 9, 2008, Krabat, an adaptation of the youth novel of the same name by Otfried Preußler was released, starring Robert Stadlober, Daniel Brühl and David Kross.

In 2009, Kreuzpaintner founded the production company Summerstorm Entertainment in Berlin, along with producers Ossie von Richthofen and Fabian Wolfart.

Education

He studied History of Art in Salzburg.

Career

He is a self-taught filmmaker with a background in film, advertising and music video production. In an interview, Kreuzpaintner revealed that "Sommersturm" was loosely based on his own coming-out story.

International Collaborations

In 2007, Kreuzpaintner worked on the Roland Emmerich-produced film "Trade." In 2008, he adapted Otfried Preußler's novel "Krabat" into a feature film.

He was the assistant to Peter Lilienthal, and then assistant to Edgar Reitz in 1998.

In 2003, his first feature-length film, Ganz und gar, which describes the life of a young leg amputee, was released in theaters.

This was followed in 2004 by the drama Sommersturm (Summer Storm), which, according to Kreuzpaintner, resembles his own coming out as a young homosexual. The film played a key role in the state of New York to finally pass a law against sex trafficking.

 

In 2018, Amazon Prime Video commissioned Beat, a German thriller television show created and directed by Kreuzpaintner.

His 2001 short film "Der Atemkünstler" was nominated for the German Film Award for Best Short Film.

Feature Films

In 2003, Kreuzpaintner released his debut feature film, "Ganz und gar." His next film, "Sommersturm" (Summer Storm), which was released in 2004, brought him international recognition and won several awards. It starred Jannis Niewöhner as the titular character, Beat.

He studied art history at the University of Salzburg in Austria.

Early Career

Kreuzpaintner began his filmmaking career working in advertising and as an assistant to Peter Lilienthal and Edgar Reitz. The series was shot at the Cinecitta film studios in Rome starring Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins amongst a big international ensemble cast.

Early Life and Education

German film director Marco Kreuzpaintner was born on March 11, 1977, in Rosenheim, Germany.

The eight-part series is produced with Netflix through Moonage Pictures, with Susie Liggat as series producer and Kreuzpaintner directing the first four episodes. It was released on 9 November 2018.

 

In 2022, an adaptation of Si Spencer's graphic novel, Bodies began production. Bodies reached number 1 on the Global Netflix Hitlist for several weeks in 39 countries.

 

In 2023 Kreuzpaintner directed 5 out of 10 episodes of 150 Million $ budgeted TV series "Those About to Die" alongside his friend Roland Emmerich.

In 1999, he directed his first short film. The Brazilian actor Jonathan Haagensen will play the male lead role.

Filming should begin in the beginning of the next year in London and Rio.

  • In 2000, he made the short film Der Atemkünstler, for which he was nominated for the Talent award First Steps, and in 2002, he made a television pilot, Rec – Kassettenmädchen/Kassettenjungs.

    Trade was produced by Rosilyn Heller and was originally supposed to be directed by Roland Emmerich. In 1999, he assumed the role of German dubbing assistant for the Stanley Kubrick film Eyes Wide Shut.

    In the same year, his first short film, Entering Reality, attracted attention at film festivals.

    In 1999, he founded the production company Die Filmmanufaktur with Oliver Weiss.
