Having seen his poor potter father getting grains in return for pots and then working as a mason after his family was uprooted from Morbi to Wankaner after the break of Machhu dam in 1979, Mansukhbhai always wanted to start an enterprise of his own.

Made of clay, the fridge works on the simple principle of ‘cooling by evaporation.’ It is maintenance free and needs no electricity to run it. Over the years, he mastered the pottery trade and envisioned a business opportunity using innovative techniques.

After five years he had an idea of making a machine to make clay tawa (pan) and he took a loan of Rs 30,000 from a money-lender known to the factory owners.

When he found the water from village ponds had bad odour and people complained of sickness, he set out to make water filters out of mud.

Mansukhbhai is a Class 10 dropout from the village of Nichimandal in Gujarat's Morbi region, where his father used it to create clay pots for a livelihood as just a family tradition.

Born to a poor potter, his family had already quit their business due to the breakdown of the Machhu dam and thereafter migrated to Morbi.

“He always dissuaded me from pursuing pottery, saying there was no money in it and no one would let their daughter marry me,” recalls Mansukhbhai, who was however convinced that bringing new technology and innovations in a traditional pottery business would yield positive results.

Back in December 1983, Mansukhbhai Prajapati was making ends meet with a modest income of Rs 300 per month at a tile manufacturing unit in Wankaner, Gujarat. In 2004, he also created a non-stick clay Tawa, which was popular at the time.

In 1980 he failed in 10th standard and dropped out of school after that.

“I also thought why not make kitchen items as per market demand. The concept also works for his brand positioning. After extensive research and overcoming financial challenges, Prajapati launched the Mitticool fridge in 2005.
