Early life and career
Rashid was born on 29 February 1948 in the village Paikora under Kalihati Upazila in Tangail District.
One of his brother's names is Kamrul Hasan Khan. His film debut came in Kittonkhola (2000).[23] He subsequently appeared in Priotomeshu (2009).[23]Rashid received acclaim for his performance as Gazi Shaheb, a key supporting character, in the critically regarded Monpura (2009), directed by Giasuddin Selim, earning him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.[14][24] His role as Sattar Molla in Mrittika Maya (2013) similarly garnered a National Film Award for acting.[14][25] Additional credits include Nekabborer Mohaproyan (2014) and Bhuban Majhi (2018).[23] In 2025, he portrays Naved Khan in Borbaad.[26]As a scriptwriter, Rashid's contributions to feature films remain sparsely credited in public records, with his primary writing output documented in theatre productions, radio dramas, and television series such as Itikotha (1994).[27][28] Descriptions of his career often group scriptwriting with his broader artistic roles, but verifiable screenplay authorship for cinema is limited compared to his acting output.[28]

Mamunur Rashid received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1982 for his work in drama.[5]For his contributions to theatre as a playwright, director, and actor, Rashid was awarded the Professor Momtazuddin Ahmed Natyajan Award by Bangla Academy in November 2022.[31] This honor, named after the prominent Bangladeshi dramatist Momtazuddin Ahmed, recognizes sustained excellence in natyajan (theatre arts).[32]Rashid has garnered multiple lifetime achievement awards highlighting his artistic impact in theatre and related fields.The group's most memorable productions include Rarang, which deals with Santal's life, and Ebong Biddyasagar. He completed his MA in Political Science from University of Dhaka. Titumir College,Dhaka and received Bachelor of Arts degree under University of Dhaka. In November 2019, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the closing ceremony of the Bottola Rangamala international theatre festival for his pioneering role in Bangladeshi stage productions.[33] That same month, he received another Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Theatre Festival in Dhaka, acknowledging his decades-long influence on performing arts.[5] In March 2023, he was presented the Jibankriti Lifetime Achievement Award in Kolkata, India, for his body of work in theatre direction and performance.[34] Additionally, in recognition of his television scriptwriting, he was named a lifetime member of the Television Playwrights' Association of Bangladesh.[35]

Mamunur Rashid has engaged in social and political movements primarily through his theatre activism, leveraging performances to critique societal issues and authoritarianism.Later he admitted Govt. He did his SSC from Bolla Coronation High School and a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Dhaka Polytechnic Institute. He joined Dhaka Polytechnic Institute and received a Diploma in Electrical Engineering degree. He was honoured with the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1982 by the Bangladesh government and Ekushey Padak in 2012.

Mamunur Rashid was born on 29 February 1948 in Tangail District, East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh), into a culturally inclined family.He is the eldest of five siblings. As a child, he witnessed the 1952 Language Movement in Dhaka, an event that shaped his early exposure to demands for Bengali cultural and linguistic rights against Pakistani domination.[4] In 1972, shortly after Bangladesh's independence, he founded Aranyak Natya Dal as part of the Group Theatre Movement, which emphasized socially conscious plays addressing class disparities, corruption, and rural exploitation, such as Ora Kadam Ali and Guinea Pig.[36] This movement, rooted in post-liberation cultural resistance, used theatre for popular education and mobilization against lingering inequalities from the war and feudal structures.[37]Rashid's activism extended to collaborative efforts with NGOs like Proshika, where Aranyak members participated in popular theatre programs to raise awareness on land rights, poverty, and gender inequities among rural and landless communities in the 1980s and 1990s.[37] Politically, he rejected a Bangla Academy award nomination during General Hussain Muhammad Ershad's military regime in the late 1980s, citing its use as a tool for regime propaganda amid suppression of dissent.[4] This stance aligned with broader cultural opposition to autocracy, prioritizing artistic independence over state honors.In recent years, Rashid has vocally supported democratic uprisings, including the 2024 quota reform protests that evolved into mass anti-government demonstrations leading to Prime MinisterSheikh Hasina's ouster on August 5, 2024.
